Ultimately, every sci-fi franchise must come to terms with how they can illustrate aliens, with most choosing the “front rubber” trope where aliens are only an exaggerated nose, ears, or gable away from looking like human beings. This allows shows to have an actor to appear under prosthetics or heavy make -up as one character, and then display later as a normal human being. It is so common until The orville If Michaela McManus were exhibiting as Janeal Tyler’s officer in season 2, no one thought of the connection with the Krill, Teleya, until it was too late, and it became too late, and it became clear that the supreme Chancellor of the future was indoors, with a mission to destroy Captain Ed Mercer.
The seeds for Janeal Tyler were planted during Teleya’s first appearance in “Krill,” arguably Season 1 of the season 1, and a highlight for The orville. Mercer uses a quick thought to destroy an advanced Krill ship, restoring a shuttle in the process, which he can use alongside Malloy to sneak aboard a Krill ship using holographic disguises. Horrified by Krill’s religious session, the pair are then touched by their experience with the children aboard the ship, as well as their teacher, Teleya.
Looking back, it makes sense that Krill’s true believer like Teleya would work as a school teacher, and then launch a very long range revenge plan. After Mercer managed to kill almost every Krill aboard the ship, he tells her that the children were not his enemy, to which Teleya responds, “After what they saw what you do today, they will. They will.” Revenge is a dish that is best served, but in season 2, it was soft and warm.
When Michaela McManus returned as officer Janeal Tyler, her arrival aboard the Orville in the first chapter of season 2 had turned heads, and there was no indication of her true nature as Teleya. Tyler set her sights on Captain Mercer and triggered other co -crew developments, gaining him over, making him fall in love with her, and eventually he managed to get himself alone from the rest of the crew and into Ambush Krill. Even after she revealed that “Janeal Tyler” is an illusion, Mercer is still in love with her, works with her to survive on a deserted planet, and is aware that there is much more Tyler inside Teleya than she realizes.
It all pays off amazing when The Orville: New Horizons Starts an Intercerical War, with the Union on one side, and the Krill on the other. That’s when the show drops the hammer, revealing, as Janeal Tyler, that Teleya was conceived with a Mercer child, a half -human/half -kirll hybrid called Alayna (which translates into “a lightweight collapse”). He is whammy to the audience, most of whom wanted Krill’s supreme back because of her chemistry with Mercer, and the most prominent way to pay the Tyler story line, but few people thought the writers would have the gut to do.
Classic sci-fi Shows would be double-cast actors to save money, usually not to present the biggest villain of their show, but that’s exactly what The orville did. Like Janeal Tyler and Teleya, Michaela McManus made a huge impression on fans, confirming his role as the most important guest star on a series filled with, including Babylon 5’s Bruce Boxleitner and the legend of Sitcom Ted danson. It is also another example of where Seth Macfarlane Trek Star tribute series was more effective than Star Trek: Discoverwho drew a similar trick with VOQ/Ash Tyler, but made the same mistake that every modern tour show makes, and could not follow the landing.
The orville Not only sticking the landing with Janeal Tyler/Teleya, but the spirit of the classic Star Trek kept alive with Shakespearan finishing for the one-time lovers who are tragic, cathartic, and possibly hopeful. Fans may never be able to see both reunite, but at least what we saw was one of the best of modern sci-fi character arcs. And to think, Teleya was supposed to appear once; If that had happened, we would be rejected the best double sci-fi action.
