After the success of The New Empire, Godzilla and Kong are preparing for a new adventure in “Monsterverse” by Legendary — but apparently next time, they’ll share the spotlight even more.
due date reports that the third film still untitled in the giant lizard/giant ape team-up series — with previous director Adam Wingard stepping aside for Grant Sputore — cast Kaitlyn Dever, who is set to play Abby. the second season of The last of usin a major starring role.
The trade also adds that the new film will also feature several titans beyond Godzilla and Kong themselves, and while the titular duo will still be the big draw (literally or otherwise), the film “looks to build on its human characters,” and it will have more of a balance between human drama and giant monsters.
It’s interesting, if only because Legendary’s Godzilla the universe had a… mixed story when it comes to its non-kaiju characters. This will not be the first time that the movies have tried to face the most serious time with people shocked by the wrath of the titans, but for the most part, especially in the Kong team movies, the human characters have been. at best eclecticat worst some of the the dumbest characters put on the screen. That may be fine in a big punchy monster action movie, but it’s less nice if the movies want to start trying to be a little more serious and focused on the human side of things.
Fortunately, we already have a great case in point of the franchise to return, even if it is not on the big screen: MonarchApple’s spinoff prequel-sequel series spanning multiple eras of the Monsterverse, did incredible work in its first season of that balancing act, delivering compelling character arcs alongside jolts of fun monster action. Of course, a TV series has much more time than a movie to do the best possible with both things, but at least it shows that this franchise is not completely incapable of providing convincing characters that are not taller than a skyscraper. , as well.
