The man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempting to kill two people using a meat grinder near the former Charlie Hebdo office in 2020.
29-year-old Zahir Mahmud from Pakistan attacked and severely injured two Premieres Lignes news agency staff a few days after Charlie Hebdo was released by the Prophet Muhammad.
He did not know that Charlie Hebdo moved offices to a secret place after 12 people were killed there as a result of an attack with a pistol, the responsibility for which al-Qaeda took after the initial publication of caricatures in 2015.
Mahmoud was convicted of assassination and terrorist conspiracy. After serving his sentence, he will be banned from entering France.
Five other Pakistanis, some of whom at the time of the crime did not take 18 years, were imprisoned for three to 12 years on charges of terrorist plotting for Mahmoud’s support.
The trial took place in a juvenile case in Paris because of their age.
The court learned that Mahmoud had an attack after Charlie Hebdo had released his caricatures on the prophet in September 2020 to mark the start of the trial of some of the perpetrators in 2015.
The court said that Mahmoud was influenced by the radical Pakistani preacher Husin Rizvin, who called him “avenge the prophet.”
Armed with meat, he arrived at the former Hebdo office in the 11th district of the French capital, attacked and severely injured two Premieres Lignes news agency, whose offices are nearby.
The witnesses at that time described how they saw their colleagues “bloody, behind which the man from Machete was chasing.”
His victims, a 32-year-old woman named “Helen” and a 37-year-old man, was present at the sentence, but did not comment on his result.
None of them accepted Mahmoud’s requests for forgiveness.
“It broke something inside me,” said a 37 -year -old boy, telling the court about a long rehabilitation process.
Mahmoud illegally arrived in France in 2017, although he originally claimed to arrive in 2019. He also lied about his age, claiming he was 18.
Mahmoud’s lawyer, Albery de Gaordon, said his client lived and worked with Pakistani and felt detached from France.
“He does not speak French, he lives with Pakistani, he works for Pakistanis,” Mr. Gayardon added. “He never left Pakistan in his head.”
