The life and times of the immortal Victor Trumper: a correction

The volume of papers presented to Victor Trumper Symposium in Sydney during 2015 was reviewed by “Archie Mac” on this website in September 2017. The book Recently Published with the title Young Vic He asked me to look again at Roger Page’s contribution to this volume, his piece was going Trumper in print. In a highly very informative and fine writing (which encompasses 8 pages), the seven words that formed the end in the next paragraph I found it more strange:

“Given Trumper’s state of celebrity, he was as famous in his day as Don Bradman during the 1930’s and 1940’s and Shane Warne in recent times, it seems incredible, at least today, that there were no books or about him during his life. Bat and ballThe story of East Melbourne and short-term publications and publications published in this age- and his life {trumper} had to be shortened. “”

(This paragraph appears on pages 165/6: added Italy.)

I soon realized that the effect of this addition has been in the water and disagree with the first sentence, while simultaneously taking a look at the bargain. Trumper died when he had already played 255 first class games to 36 and 4 months, with 15 full seasons in Australia plus five tours abroad. And it is reasonable to wait for even good health, Trumper would not have more than 4 to 6 years old effective Participation in the first class cricket left it, at which time it would have been in the early 1940’s.

In addition, Trumper could have been reluctant to continue beyond his thirty years, while he collected that at this moment his family could no longer support him and have had the need for paid work. He was classified as a “amateur” cricket and did not receive a salary or game to play the game (although he benefited his witness game monetary, held in February 1913 and received a portion of the door receipts to cover potential expenses and losses). Therefore, participation in the cricket would have eaten the potentially spent time working and being paid for it.

Although it is said on the cover of this volume of papers that is “ edited by Ronald Cardwell ”, after the title page there is a note that lists a trio of publishers, including Juee Gould and Peter Lloyd, as well as Mr Cardwell, although without conforming to certain roles to one or more of these individuals. However, as Mr. Cardwell was the actually Chief publisher, he should be responsible for this publishing gaffe, even if he was not the underlying culprit.

And not only the author – Roger Page – realizes that his sent manuscript has been modified. It transposes that Mr. Cardwell now acknowledges that in fact, a publishing gaffe has been made. Personally, I think its effect is what a shadow can be launched on the piece by Roger Page as a whole.

Consequently, the main objective of this note of “correction” is to alert those who have acquired a copy of this volume to this particular issue and suggest that they go to the top of page 166 and to exceed the last seven offensive words. Then they could see Roger’s piece with a more favorable light. (And if a reprint is contemplated at the time, the error can be corrected – by omission.)

Finally, to say, it is possible that Mr. Cardwell himself may not have any surviving note of the miserable addition. The skeptics could ask -if the addition was made by the non -observed intervention of an unknown external party. The ones who believe in the existence of aliens and think that there is credible evidence that they had sometimes visited this land, could suspect that this has been the true source of the seven additional words. I must admit that maybe aliens have made these visits. However, it is a long arc to think that certain aliens have known about this particular cricket and the fact that their life was reduced. For one thing, they would have needed the ability to read the English language and also managed to do a relevant document. So I think we can discount such a cause of the addition.
