Arenean Illinois, who mortally stabbed a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy and a seriously injured mother, was sentenced to 53 years in prison.
73-year-old Joseph Cheb was convicted in February for crimes for murder and hatred for the death of Wadi Alfayumi and his mother Hanan Shahin in 2023 shortly after the start of the Israel-Gaza war.
The family was a tenant at the Cheb House in Pleinfield, approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Chicago. Prosecutors said he had sent them to his Muslim faith.
Cheb pleaded not guilty, but the jury condemned him after the discussion in less than 90 minutes.
Great Uncle Wadee Alfayoumi, Mahmoud Yusef, said in court on Friday that the boy’s death would not be justified, NBC News reports.
“On the day he was killed, his father had memories, planned his son,” he continued, saying that Chuba “had no right to accept them.”
Appearing in red prison, the subtle and fragile appearance refused to speak out of his name.
The trial included the testimony of Alfayumi’s mother, which described the meeting in the painful details, and from the already ex -wife of the Chuba, who stated that he had agreed in the war.
According to Reuters, Hanan Shakhin testified that Cheb told her “you, as a Muslim, should die.”
On the day of the attack he made his way into the house of the Alpha Family. Prosecutors said.
He told his mother with a knife for a dozen times, stated the prosecutor’s office, and then turned to the boy and stab him 26 times.
The evidence during the trial included photos of the graphic crime, and the police said they had found a Cheb outside the house after the attack of his body and the hands covered with blood.
The death attack has received national attention and a new problem of Islamophobia, anti -Muslim discrimination, and anti -Polesian prejudices.
The young boy celebrated his sixth birthday just a few weeks before he was killed.
“He loved his family, his friends. He loved football, he loved basketball,” said the Chicago Council for US Islamic Relations (Cair) at the time.
