Thousands of firefighters were mobilized to combat the fire that reached the outer region of Marseille, the second largest city in France.
“The guerrilla warfare, the hoses in the hands are waging a guerrilla warfare,” said the mayor of Benueta, referring to the Marseille Fire Service and the rescue service.
The prefect of the Bushe-Da-Rhon district, Georges-Francheso Lecler, urged the locals to stay indoors and stated that firefighters were “defending” the city.
He said that when the situation was not static, it was “under control”.
According to French media, at least 400 people were evacuated from their homes. Nine firefighters are said to have been injured.
About 20 buildings were at least partially victims of the fire, and the fires were rescued by hundreds of houses, Lecler said.
