The head of the organization, created to distribute assistance in Gaza in the framework of the controversial Israeli plan, resigned, saying that he could not work in such a way as to adhere to “humanitarian principles”.
Jake Wood came out of the Gazaic Fund (GHF) late Sunday, saying that he would not be able to fulfill the principles of “humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence”.
The plan, which is also underpinned by the United States, provides for private contractors who assist the Palestinians through Israeli, appointed distribution places. It was strongly criticized by the United Nations, which states that it will not participate.
Israel insists that the plan is needed to stop help with the theft of Hamas, which the armed group denies.
According to the GHF plan, Palestinians are expected to collect boxes weighing up to 20 kg (44 pounds) containing food and basic hygiene from four distribution points in the south of gas.
It is unclear how weak or wounded will be able to gather help.
UN Head of Assistance Tom Fletcher said it would force further displacement, restrict only one part of the gas and make “hunger is a negotiation chip”.
In his statement of Wood resignation, a former US Marine Corps, said: “Two months ago, I was approached by GHF’s efforts from my humanitarian experience.
“Like many others around the world, I was horrified and crashed into the gas crisis and, as a humanitarian leader, was forced to do whatever I could to help ease the suffering.”
He said “proud of the work I oversee, including the development of a pragmatic plan that can feed hungry people, solve security problems about sabotage, and supplement the work of ancient NGOs in Gaza.”
But, he said, it became clear that it was impossible to implement this plan, at the same time strictly adhering to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence that I will not refuse. “
In response, GHF stated that “there will be no false resignation” and will start assisting on Monday, with the aim of reaching one million Palestinians by the end of the week.
The group stated that the critics “that use the status were more focused on the rupture of this separately than to get help, fearing that new, creative solutions of unsolvable problems could actually succeed.”
Added: “Our trucks are loaded and ready to go.”
Israeli media reports that the first of four distributed centers will be opened by GHF on Monday morning.
Last week, Israel weakened an 11 -week blockade across the food, fuel, medicine and other Gas materials, and in recent days the first aid trucks reached civilians – but the UN stated that it was “a fall in the ocean what it is needed.”
Last week, the World Nutrition Program (WFP) warned that the whole population is “on the border”.
Jan Ageland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said the BBC program today that GHF is “militarized, privatized, politicized” and “does not fit the neutrality”.
“People who are behind him are military-former CIA and former military people … Let’s get back to the system that worked,” he said.
GHF is also subjected to intense control over its funding, origin and support.
Over the weekend, investigation from The New York Times The proposed group may have been conceived in Israel by a group of Israeli officials and military officers and their partners in Israeli business sector.
Responding to the plan earlier this month, the UN Socialist -Secretary of Children’s Foundation Jonathan Creek said: “How is the mother of four children who lost her husband, going to move 20 kg back to her improvised tent, sometimes a few kilometers?”
“The most vulnerable people, including the elderly, people with disabilities, sick and wounded, and orphans, will face huge problems for helping.”
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas’s cross -border attack on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and took 251 people hostage.
At least 53,939 people, including at least 16,500 children, have since been killed in Gaza, the Ministry of Health reports.
