NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has welcomed a warning by newly elected US President Donald Trump that Russia could face additional tariffs and sanctions if it does not end the war in Ukraine.
“I was very, very pleased with Trump’s position to introduce additional sanctions against Russia. We know that the Russian economy is doing very badly, and sanctions will help,” he told CNBC on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.”
He expressed the hope that Europe will now also “strengthen” sanctions to “stifle the Russian economy” and reduce Moscow’s military coffers.
“Trump is right, Ukraine is closer to Europe, but Trump is also right that this is a geopolitical conflict, so I’m sure the US wants it to end with a good and strong deal,” Rutte added.
Asked about his current assessment of the war between Ukraine and Russia, Rutte said that “at the moment it is not moving in the right direction”.
President Trump warned Russia on Wednesday that it could face additional tariffs and sanctions if it does not end the war in Ukraine. He has also previously threatened to cut Ukraine’s military funding, raising questions about whether Europe needs to decide whether to step into the gap left by the U.S.
