The Algerian court sentenced an 80-year-old writer to five years in prison after being charged with the country’s territorial integrity.
Last year, Booal Sansal was arrested after an interview with the extreme French media that France gave too much Algeria’s land and too little Morocco in the colonial era.
He also said that the controversial territory of the Western Sahara was historically part of Morocco.
During his detention, the French-Alzhar, the author spent time in the hospital for poor health.
His case caused a wave of support from intellectuals and politicians, including at the Nigerian Nobel Prize received by the author, Wall Soyko and French President Emmanuel Macron.
“The arbitrary detention of Boualem Sansal, except for its anxious health situation, is one of the elements to settle before confidence (between our countries) can be completely restored,” Macron said in February.
According to his friends, the writer is at the center of the deepening of the diplomatic series.
“He does not want pawns in a problematic relationship between Paris and Algeria,” said the Committee of his supporters in France recently.
Algeria once was revered by the French colony and fought with a bad war for independence, as a result of winning sovereignty in 1962.
The relations have long been tense between the two countries, but last year reached a new low when France supported Morocco’s demand for Western Sahara, where Algeria supports a polycario group that fought for the territory’s independence.
Algeria responded to this minor, withdrawing his ambassador to Paris.
Three years earlier, Algeria broke up diplomatic ties with Morocco.
Following the court ruling on Wednesday, Sansal’s lawyer asked President Algeria Abdelmadzhid Tebbun to show the writer “Humanity”.
Sansal is well known for its anti -Islamic views and is an open critic of the Algerian government.
His detractors say he is loved by the far right, which satisfies his prejudices.
The far -right French leader Marin Le Pen called Sansala “a fighter for freedom and a courageous opponent of Islamism.”
Earlier, his age was reported 75 years old, but his publishers Galimard say he was actually 80.
The most famous works of Sansalo include 2084 – satire about religious radicalism, which won the Grand – at the French Academy Francophony ten years ago.
His next Vivre novel must be published in May and tells about a selected group of people who are chosen for colonization of the new planet when the Earth approaches the apocalypse.
