Dozens of former officials talked to the BBC about their role, which acts as the brutality of the Assad regime – including the person who said he tortured the detainees and then passed in 2012.
Rare testimony from the first hands are part of the BBC investigation into Syria’s notorious prisons under his former President Bashar al -Assad, who was overthrown in December last year.
The UN report earlier this year that detentions and torture under the former regime are crimes against humanity.
Syrian human rights groups estimated that about 100,000 people disappeared under the 24-year-old Assad rule.
The BBC agreed to hide the persons of former officials with whom he spoke out of the cost of his testimony.
In the UK you can watch a full documentary, Survived in Syria’s prison, here.
