The former Mancherser United goalkeeper David de Gea

David de Gea has said that he will not disseminate the full story behind his bankruptcy transfer to Real Madrid until after retiring, although he believes that the result was ultimately.

Espanyol was on the shore of Manchester United in Madrid on the day of the summer deadline of 2015, but the agreement was famous due to late procedures.

Now playing Fiorentina, the veteran goalkeeper reflected on the saga in an interview with the Italian departure Cronache di Spogliatoio.

“I will talk about all this when my career is over. When things don’t happen, it’s for a reason,” he said. “It was nearby, but the transfer was not completed … Personally, it was good because Manchester is my house.”

De Gea joined the United from Atlético Madrid in 2011 and became one of the club’s most consistent performers, winning the Premier League in 2012-13 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

During his 12 -year stay, he raised several other important trophies, such as the FA CUP (2016), Europa League (2017) and the Carabao Cup twice (2017 and 2023).

He made 545 appearances to the Red Devils before leaving the club in 2023 when he expired his contract.

After a year of football, De Gea signed Fiorentina in 2024 as a free agent. Described the rupture as a transformer both mentally and physically.

“It was one of the best years of my life,” he said. “That sabbatical year made me a good world, both mental and physically: I felt a little crazy. I felt that it was time to stop and get back stronger and it went well.”

Despite receiving offers to stay at the Premier League, Gea explained that joining another English club was never an option.

“It is true that I had offers from other English clubs, but in my heart it was impossible to play for another club. I just wanted to play United because it is the club where I developed, where I have been for most of my career and had a very good career. I also had offers from other countries.”

At 34, Gea seems to have found a second wind in Italy. He kept 11 clean sheets for 42 appearances last season and recently committed his future with Fiorentina by signing a new contract that will keep him in the club until June 2028.
