The two most popular Sci-Fi franchisees in the world, Star Trek and Star Wars, address the genre of different directions; The first envy a utopian future, while the latter is more fantasy, but both contain clear differences between good and bad. The third road emerged thanks to the influential British series, Blake’s 7did the criminals heroes and rough around the margins, showing a sci-fi universe where the line between good and evil is unclear. With a focus on multi-chapter story lines and a dark, dark-minded tone, the BBC series also laid the foundation for later shows Babylon 5. Firefly. Barscapeand the Battlestar Galactica Re -do.
Not good men, not bad men
The Blake of Blake’s 7 Roj Blake (Gareth Thomas), leader of the rebellion against the Federation, Brainwashed, is unraveled, and then framed for crimes that did not committed and sent to a prison planet. A born leader, Blake helps other prisoners escape by commuting the Liberal, a mysterious ship run by a developed AI computer called Zen. The thing is, although Blake is the captain by default, he has full hands keeping his compeller compatriots in line as they try to pull the federation down.
Alongside Blake is Avon, the computer genius living by logic code and reason, which sounds like a spock, except that he is also greedy and willing to sacrifice his fellow shippers to save his own skin, Vila, the cowardly thief with a love of boiling, Jenna Stannis, smuggler and a skilled pilot, a close pilot, and a close pilot and a close pilot, and a pilot. The other half includes Cally, telepath with a death wish, Olag The Giant Bruiser with an implanted device in his brain to keep him calm and docile, and Zen, the sentimental computer. The crew in Blake’s 7 would never be confused to enterprise officials, or even the rebel Alliance, but arguably a precursor to the Moya crew FARSCAPE.
Set the foundation for a new way forward
Blake’s 7 Following the usual format of British television, with four termly shortened seasons of 13 episodes, but in an unusual turn for Sci-Fi, the whole season was written by the show’s creator, Terry Nation, a feat that it would not be broken until J. Michael Straczynski wrote Babylon 5. The first two seasons play out as the precursor to another modern classic, Battlestar Galactica. This is why although the British series has shown in 1978 with a budget that today would be considered non -existent, it is still a dear fan favorite called decades ahead of her time.
Watch 30 seconds of the show and you can say that she had no budget, but he had a strong sense of his characters, giving the emphasis not on spectacular special effects, but how the seven abrasive personality bounces off in different combinations to the point where every few chapters appear, someone threatens to leave the relief forever. Terry Nation Opera wrote a spaceship about horrific people who are infused in the same cynicism and anti-government attitude exploring England during the 70s, and yet, he manages to keep a sense of fun throughout. No matter the decade he was released, Blake’s 7 would be called for being a creative, bold new snapshot sci-fi.
The most impressive part of the show is how it manages to pull everything together for one of the most drop -off funding of any series. In a world with shows ending on cliffers and others set up to launch outcomes or revivals, it is refreshing to know that Blake’s 7 ends the story. If you’re bored of the Star Trek Federation and have seen too many Star Wars characters who are said to be the worst of the Galaxy turning out to be Teddy Bears, then it’s worth your time to ignite a Britbox (available alone or as part of Hamazon Prime Video), and enjoy a Sci-Fi series that broke the mold and proved to sci-fi fans there is more than one way to explore Laaxy Bell, far away.
