The first voting of the conc – the secret process of choosing a new pope – could not decide.
After a long wait, black smoke came out of the chimney of the Sistine chapel at about 9:00 pm – that is, 133 cardinals were unable to choose a new pontiff.
The crowds were assembled in tens of thousands in St. Peter’s Square for the first Kanchev – the results of which took more than two hours.
Cardinals will return to the closed door for additional voting rounds tomorrow.
