After the days of uncertainty and negotiations, the funeral was completed for the former President of Zambia.
Edgar Lung, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, died 11 days ago in South Africa, where he was treated for an undisclosed disease.
According to his family, he left the instructions that his political competitor and the current president of Hockey Hicilem “should not come anywhere near his body.”
But the Lung’s family press confirmed that an agreement was reached with the government, which allowed Hickeme to preside over the state burial next Sunday.
The line caused embarrassment among some in Zambia when people left the question of how they should mourn their former leader.
After days of negotiations, the Lung family and the government agreed that:
- The body of the former president will fly to Zambia’s capital Lusak on Wednesday in a private charter plane
- Upon arrival at body airport will be taken by family and then full military rewards will
- Then he will be transported to Lung’s residence in Lusak where he will lie in the state
- For three days starting Thursday, it will be delivered to the conference -center in the capital, where the public can pay respect
- A state burial will take place on Sunday, June 22 when the next day the official mourning will end
- The former president will be registered on Monday at the Embassy Park, the official presidential burial.
At a joint briefing in South Africa, Lung Sulu Makebi’s Family Sitting, sitting together with the secretary of the Zambia’s cabinet Patrick’s cabinet, stated that the family apologized for “inconvenience and pain, which may have caused prolonged negotiations, but we did our best to honor the former president.”
Mr. Zulu also said that the family was going on the basis that the government “does not deviate from our agreement.”
Speaking for the government, Mr. Kangva turned to unity and thanked Zambians for their patience “during this difficult time”.
After six years, as the head of state, Lung lost the election in Khichilem in 2021 at a large separation.
After that, he retreated from politics, but later returned to the fight.
He had ambitions to fight the presidency again, but at the end of last year the Constitutional Court banned him from running, deciding that he had already fulfilled a maximum of two terms allowed by law.
Despite the disqualification by the presidential election, he remained extremely influential in Zambian politics and did not hold back in criticizing his successor.
Last year, Lung complained about pursuing the police and accused the authorities of effectively imposed on house arrest. He also said he was not allowed to leave the country. The government denied both allegations.
