Former Russian General has been imprisoned for seven years after he was accused of taking bribery.
Lieutenant General Vadin Shamarin was arrested last year During the repression of corruption in the Ministry of Defense launched by the Kremlin and was accused of accepting a “particularly large bribe” from a telecommunications campaign.
The Russian Investigative Committee stated that from 2019 to 2023, he took bribes worth 36 million rubles (£ 331,000) from 2019 to 2023, which produces communication equipment – and, in return, increased the amount of state contracts sentenced.
Prior to his arrest, he held the post of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Army, who overseeing signals and military communications.
The Russian agency TASS-News quotes lawyer Shamarin: “A total of Shamarin was sentenced to seven years in the maximum security colony, a seven-year ban on public service, and was deprived of his military title.”
The court also seized 36 million rubles from it, reports RIA Novosti news agency.
Shamarin was one of the senior activists of the Ministry of Defense who were detained last year, which also included Deputy Minister of Defense Timur Ivanov and Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the department of the Ministry of Defense.
This happened after Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed his long -term Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in May 2024.
It was replaced by Andrei Belusov, an economist with little military experience.
Experts suggested that corruption repression noted the Kremlin’s attempt to increase efficiency in the Russian military.
