The European Commission has published a “Road Map”, which outlines its plans to stop Europe’s dependence on Russian energy in the coming years.
According to plans, the import of all Russian gases and liquefied natural gas from the European Union will be banned by the end of 2027.
“We will no longer allow Russia to arm energy against us … We will no longer indirectly help fill the military chests (Kremlin),” European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said in a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
In response to the plans, Kremlin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday the Reuters agency that Europe was “shooting at the leg”.
The EU has promised to stop its energy relations with Russia after Moscow Launched a complete invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In June, a set of legislative proposals asking all EU member states to make “national plans” to stop Russian gas, nuclear fuel and oil imports, the European Commission reports.
EU member states must submit strategies as part of plans to replace Russian oil by the end of 2027.
The countries also proposed to outline strategies for their dependence on Russia to uranium enriched with uranium and other nuclear materials.
The European Union hopes to move away from Russian gas by “increasing energy efficiency, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and diversification of supplies,” the European Commission said.
While EU dependence on Russian oil, gas and nuclear fuel has decreased significantly after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the block still imports a significant amount of its energy from Russia.
According to the report, EU gas imports decreased from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.
At the beginning of 2022, the proportion of the import of Russian oil also decreased from 27%.
It is necessary to work to reduce the block addiction on Russian nuclear materials, products and services, according to a message in which more than 14% of uranium in the EU was obtained from Russia in 2024.
The report states that the EU dependence on Russian gas, oil and nuclear fuel causes a “risk to our economic security” and financially supports Russia’s military economy.
“We came far, but not enough,” Joldensen added to a press conference on Tuesday, adding that the stopping of Russian energy will be “gradually and gradually” to minimize the impact on the EU.
The roadmap also includes plans for orientation on the use of Russia “shadow fleets” – oil tankers “with incomprehensible property and insurance”, which Russia uses to maintain oil exports and bypass sanctions.
