Steuart Smith Has announced his retirement as chief guitarist of the Eagles after being diagnosed with Parkinsonism.
Smith, 72, served as the band’s touring co-leading guitarist for 24 years by side Joe Walsh. Smith joined the Eagles for the first part of their Las Vegas residency in the sphere between September 20 and December 14, 2024. He announced his departure on Monday, January 27.
“With intense distress, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I see that I have to bow down from my role with the eagles while I can still make so graceful,” he said in a statement to ‘ r Los Angeles Times. “It’s been a big quarter of a century, and I had hoped to be able to finish out this year with the band, but I now have to do what’s best for everyone involved.”
According to the Parkinson Foundation Website, Parkinsonism is “a term used to describe a collection of movement symptoms associated with several conditions,” which includes Parkinson’s disease. Parkinsonism symptoms can include stiffness, walking and balancing issues as well as tremor. Smith did not point out the type of Parkinsonism that he was diagnosed with.

“The Eagles will be forever grateful for the wonderful talents that brought us to our live recordings and performances,” noted Henley, 77. “Steuart will be greatly missed, but will always be part of our family musical. We know that our many fans join us to wish him well. “
Smith, known for ripping a double neck guitar, will be replaced by a session guitarist Chris Holtwho first joined the band on stage in the sphere on January 17. Holt and Smith are already friends and have previously traveled together as part of Henley’s solo band.

“These are some of the most beautiful guitar work ever recorded, in my opinion,” Holt continued. “This is the highest honor for me to do, and I have a duty to get it right.” The musician, who also sings harmony along with playing guitar, noted that he was “definitely challenging” to play with the Eagles.
“There’s a ton of iconic lead guitar to play – solos that people know every note of – so you want to make sure you get the tones and sentence quite right,” he told the outlet. “The Eagles are legendary perfectionists and the parts are difficult, so it’s not always easy to nail.”
The Las Vegas residency of the Eagles will rise again in the sphere on Friday, February 14, and will run through Saturday, April 12.
