The Dragon Ball Super Hero movie was made to give Piccolo a W

Back in 2022, Toei blew it Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a very beautiful film that presented a new style of art and setting Piccolo and Gohan (aka, his son) in the forefront. If you are away from the movie loved every character, especially the first one, which seems to have been the goal at all.

During a recent radio show that celebrated Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary, longtime executive producer Akio Iyoku talked about the series’ past and current projects. According to notes translated by Twitter users peraperayume (Thank you, CBR), Iyoku wanted Piccolo to be on par with Goku and Vegeta, both of whom had a significant level in everything. Dragon Ball Super run and Broly movie At that point, Piccolo had none, something that many fans of the character have noticed. Iyoku was one such fan, and he was trying to solve this problem.

As mentioned, he sought out creator Akira Toriyama’s advice on how to do well from the Namekian. Ultimately, their talks sparked the idea for Toriyama to write super hero. That movie puts Goku and Vegeta aside so that Piccolo and Gohan can take center stage and take on a new Red Ribbon Army. Eventually, the duo unlocks new forms to use, with Piccolo being a handsome new one Orange mode considered by Toriyama as its first proper update.

While Piccolo is in the current Dragon Ball Daima anime, his Orange form didn’t appear in it, ditto last year’s fighting game Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. (It was, however, added in Xenoverse 2 as DLC.) It sounds like the movie did its job and made people want more Piccolo. Now, it’s just a matter of how Toei balances that demand with that of other fan-favorite characters – even more so since The death of Toriyama beginning of last year.
