The Democratic congressman is urging his party to work with Trump

Rep. Tom Swazi, DNY, rang in the new year with a guest essay in the New York Times urging fellow Democrats to ditch the resistance movement and work with President-elect Donald Trump for his second term.

U a piece of itThe congressman acknowledged that the results of the 2024 election show that voters want the Democratic Party to compromise on key issues such as the economy and immigration, rather than obstruct Trump’s agenda as it did during his first term.

“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to oppose Mr. Trump at every turn: to unite against his bills, block his nominees, and shut down the House and Senate. It would be a mistake,” he said.

Suozzi, which was elected in New York’s 3rd Congressional District earlier this year after former Republican Rep. George Santos left, admitted he was wary of Trump’s willingness to compromise with Democratic lawmakers, citing some of the former’s president after the election.

“I am not delusional: some of Mr. Trump’s actions do not give confidence that he is willing to be bipartisan and make the compromises necessary for a functioning democracy,” he said, pointing to the future president’s “radical cabinet picks” and his demands until recently, the government spending bill and his “arrogance” in bringing businessmen and advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Capitol Hill.

Swazi advised that Trump should “embrace his inner negotiator and negotiate with the other party, which holds just under half the seats on Capitol Hill and key governorships across the country,” adding that if Trump does that, “Democrats have to meet with him halfway, rather than being the party of no.

The lawmaker went on to decry his party’s “significant shift to the left” and noted that both sides of the aisle want to work together. “But as a smart Democrat who won in a district where Mr. Trump won, I’m confident that our deeply divided electorate would prefer bipartisan solutions to political gridlock.”

He acknowledged Trump’s point victory was a “mandate” from the American people, but clarified that it is not “for one-party rule.”

“But as I see it, the outcomes of the 2024 campaign were a mandate for border security, immigration reform, low inflation, economic stability, and an understanding of the struggle between culture and war,” he argued.

He continued by offering examples of what democratic trade-offs might look like, starting with climate change. He said: “Democrats cannot abandon our zeal to fight climate change. At the same time, let’s balance our commitment to protecting the environment with pragmatic measures that ensure affordable utility bills and manageable costs at the pump.”

“Let’s move beyond relentless attacks on shared religious values while ensuring that the rights, safety and dignity of all are preserved,” Suozzi said, acknowledging that liberals must embrace “efforts to make government more efficient and effective” while still protecting “strengthening Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.”

Suozzi said his New Year’s resolution was to rise above partisanship and controversy by following “common sense.”
