The DC universe is off and runs under the leadership of James Gunn. With Commandos creature and SupermanWe have had a barrage of Gunn’s specific reef on the DC characters and their world, but soon we will begin to see other projects where its direct presence will be less obvious.
And here is where the DCU has its strongest opportunity to succeed, and Gunn is definitely aware of this fact. Gunn has said he doesn’t want a “company style” to be how the DCU films are made because he doesn’t want people to get bored.
TAKE STAB IN MARVEL
You know that stabbing a bleed in Wonders Studios. Marvel’s cinematic universe has gone on long enough that a prominent “house style” has evolved over time. That is not by accident either as the Mcu Made his bread by guaranteeing uniformity to their projects so that the audience never feels too far from home.
While I’m not here to discuss the positive/negative/successes/failures of the MCU, I’m here to say that DCU is at a great start by doing things very different from the MCU.
We’ve already seen a more “jump -in” attitude towards the DCU with James Gunn’s Superman And it doesn’t seem to have turned people away if the box office numbers are any sign. Instead of taking the MCU’s laborious attitude of establishing things and making each individual character feel like the most important person in the world, the DCU demonstrates a willingness to shed many new things to viewers with little organization.
Feeling more like comic books
In fact, that actually conveys the feeling of raising a random comic book far more than the MCU. Comics often had to do their best to continue ongoing stories while still welcoming new readers. It involves flexing a different set of storytelling muscles than the detailed board setting method that Marvel made so successfully.
In my opinion, that method is actually more invited. I will admit that I am a lifelong comics reader so I may be more skilled in this kind of “shut up and enjoy the ride” of structure, but after nearly two decades of wonder each character needs to be set up in a post-scene scene that frames them as the most important person, I am more welcome to welcome that the part of a model is hung in the audience.
Add to that James Gunn statement that the DCU will strive to provide very different film experiences and feels like the DCU does its best to offer an experience that the MCU has not provided. For as much as Marvel pours out his various filmography, there is no argument that they all have to enact a specific tone to connect with the rest of their universe. If the DCU can maintain a general continuity when offering specific films that stand alone, they will leave the MCU in the dust. Here’s hope.
