Geeky TV programs were limited in the 80s. Back then, if a series had a strange powers and a young Courteney Cox, he adhered to you.
Everyone was watching the same things because options were slim, no streaming, no endless queues. The few Geeky shows were available, were all there to watch. It didn’t matter if they were good.
But now? Those shows no longer matter, and are eliminated from existence. One of those games of the age, the Series of the Odball NBC 1985 Misfits of Sciencedisappears. You cannot stream, rent it, or buy it legally in the US. It’s like never happened. And that’s a crime against nostalgia.
Misfits of Science in pure 80s with a sci-fi Twist. A team of extremely power odballs works for a think tank called the Humanidyne Foundation, studying “Human Inconsistencies.” Leading the package is Dr. Billy Hayes, played by Dean Paul Martin, a fast designer with no powers but enough charm to glue the group together. He is the brain, always very busy to keep their misconduct funded.
Then Dr. Elvin “El” Lincoln, portrayed by the tremendous Kevin Peter Hall (Yep, the guy who played the predator). EL can shrink down to 11 inches tall thanks to some hormonal tool, but wears fast, leading to funny misfortunes.
Johnny “Johnny B” Bukowski, shaken by Mark Thomas Miller, is a former zapped poem with electrical powers. He shoots lightning and runs very fast as The flash.
His love interest is Gloria Dinallo. That’s Coureney Cox as a teenager with thelekinesis, raising things with her mind when dealing with a trial drama.
They fight crime, tackle government conspiracies, and are bugle through a supernatural mess.
Chapters such as the “Deep Freeze” pilot have been thawed into a frozen cave. In “Guess what comes to dinner?” alien Party accident.
The show wasn’t afraid to get weird. “Against All Oz” is full Oz wizard Parodi with the team at Dreamland. And the “three days of the mixer” untreated in the US? A blender turns out to be a portal or something nuts.
Misfits of Science Lightweight, funny, and heartfelt, perfect for children who dream of powers. It is Ghostbusters meet Team A.With Madcap Energy and no budget for subtlety. Created by James D. Parriott, he broadcast on Friday on NBC, aiming for that family-friendly slot. One season, 16 episodes, including a 90 -minute pilot, and Poof, is gone.
In the mid -80s, the TV exploded with a genre mash. The largest American hero wrapped in ’83, A knight at cruise, and V scarring everyone with aliens. Misfits of Science Slotted Right in, inspired by the NBC Head of Brandon Tarkoff Wip: “We will rely on the national inquirer for story ideas.” Reverberate Ghostbusters‘Success of ’84, comedy mixing, action and supers.
Creator Parriott even taped Tim Kring for his first writing meat; Kring made later Hero In 2006, which feels like a spiritual sequel to the show. Mislead The prosperity predicted a superhero, but arrived there too early.
Cast-wise, it’s a time capsule. Breakout Courteney Cox’s Role, ex-Family tiesex-Friends. Dean Paul Martin, son of Dean Martin, brought Vibes Rat Pack.
Kevin Peter Hall? A gentle giant who fitted like Harry in Harry and the Hendersons and the predator. Max Wright as Director of the Bossy Foundation? The father would soon be on Alf. It was a launch, but the Show’s short run buried.
Historically, it is a footnote in NBC’s TV construction must be seen. Broadcast against Dallas On CBS, it was a cruel slot. But he held the optimism of the 80s, science as fun, not destined. In a pre-stitching world, it could have been syndicated forever. Instead, it’s a relic, whispered by aging nerds like me.
Misfits of Science The X-Men was the TV before the X-Men hit screens. Ragtag team of Mutanians, though, inconsistencies, fight a baddies when hiding from norms? Sounds familiar?
He may have been too familiar. In 1985, Misfits of Science face a legal hiccup of Wonders Comics for the character Arnold “Beef”/”Ice Man” Beifeiter, played by Mickey Jones.
Included in the pilot, its cryogenic freezing powers echoed the character of X-Men Marvel, Iceman too close. Marvel raised objections, forcing the show to ditch beef after one episode to avoid a legal proceedings.
The team kept the ice cream truck, which was initially used to keep beef cool, without explanation, reminiscent of the dispute. This conflict was an early lesson in Marvel’s fierce defense of his IP, even in the ’80s, and left misstatements scrambling to a pillar early. He probably played a part in NBC’s decision to cancel the show.
That’s not the only reason the show was canceled. It was a pure score flop. Debuted October 4, 1985; last broadcast on February 21, 1986. Yanked NBC mid -season, leaving one unchanged EP on the state side.
He never had a chance. They put the show up against Dallas, the biggest show on television at the time. NBC moved on to Golden Girls Glory.
The showcase tragedy of the show was nothing compared to what happened to its stars. Unfortunately, Dean Paul Martin died in 1987. He had been a pilot all his life and a member of the California National Guard since 1980. At the flight of a national guard jet, he crashed in a storm. He was only 35 years old.
Misfits of Science Lingered in pop culture for years after he disappeared, but now he’s gone. You can’t watch Misfits of Science legally anywhere in the US. Is not available anywhere on streamand definitely not legal.
You would think nbc would throw it on PeacockBecause, why not? But no, the show isn’t there. Some eps pop on YoutubeBootleg style, but that’s a piracy roulette.
Why? The theme song can be a cause. The show’s themed song is one of the best opening credit numbers ever, and appears to be broken in extreme copyright policing. Try to play a few seconds of it on YouTube, and you will see what I mean. Listen below.

The song “Feels Like Science” was performed by Karen Lawrence and composed by The Great Basil Poledouris, the genius behind a film score like Robocop and Conan the barbarian. Work is like it often ends in lockdown vaults, which could be part of the problem with wrongdoing. It’s not worth the trouble to solve it all.
Science misbehaves are another victim of Hollywood negligence.
Misfits of Science Deserves credit for being one of the earliest efforts on programming television in the form of a superhero. He prepared the road to X-Men and much of what Marvel has done in the 2000s.
In one sense, it is almost refreshing to watch now, if you can find it. Low stakes, funny heroes, transferable problems, and no CGI flowering. Only a few simple effects and a bunch of dissatisfied, highly attractive young people run around problem solving. Misfits of Science deserves better than deleting from history. Please let the world and NBC know.
