The bodies of three US soldiers in a peat swamp in Lithuania, where they were missing six days ago, taking part in military exercises, the US army confirmed.
Rescue groups are still looking for a fourth soldier near the city of Pabrada.
“The soldiers we lost in this tragedy were not only soldiers – they were part of our family … But the search was not over until everyone is at home,” said Master General Christopher Nori in a statement issued by the US and Africa.
The complex search and rescue mission included the US and Navy army, as well as the Lithuanian and Polish armed forces in efforts demanding “huge resources,” the statement said.
Four soldiers were missing On the morning of March 25, during the exercises at Hercules M88A2 – a large armored car designed to restore damaged tanks and other battles fields.
They “conducted the mission to repair and tug the immobilized tactical vehicle” when they were missing, the statement said.
The soldiers’ car was found immersed in the swamp near the border from Belarus at the beginning of March 26. Pulling it out of the dirt was a difficult mission.
The US Navy’s divers were brought to connecting cables to a sunken vehicle, and they had to maneuver “through thick layers of dirt, clay and nozzle nozzle,” the report said.
Then these cables were connected to two more Hercules M88A2, which also began to slide into the swamp, which led to what caused several bulldozers.
Another heavy construction machinery was brought, including excavators, as well as pumps, as well as technical experts and “several hundred tons of gravel and land,” the US army said.
On Sunday, soldiers, military commanders and the Lithuanian Defense Minister attended the Male held in the capital of Vilnius.
“Lithuania mourns together with the American nation,” the country’s President Gitanas Nausda wrote on X.
“Please accept my dense condolences, as well as Lithuanian people, close people who have lost their lives, and all the United States people,” he said, addressing US President Donald Trump.
Lithuania, NATO and EU member, is the basis for more than 1000 US troops located on rotation.
The persons of the four soldiers who were appointed in the 1st armored team on the combat brigade, the 3rd Infantry Division were retained until their next relatives were reported.
They were located in Lithuania as part of the Atlantic determination operation – a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Their home base is Fort Stewart, in the US.
The US Army and the Lithuanian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
