The best science fiction universe operates in accordance with a set of rules, rules that make them what they are.
Battlestar GalacticaFor example, operating in a polished world based on complex human dynamics and faith and belief questions.
Star Wars Acts as a classic adventure film. The original film is often used by coaches as a way to teach students about the best way to structure a classic hero journey.
In a previous video, you can find it related to it in the description of this one we dug into rules Trek Star. Those rules are what makes Star Trek feel like Star Trek, and they include things as a focus on human progress and technological consistency and stories told of groups of people who explore the unknown.
But the actual Star Trek Productions owned the paramount are not the only things that use rules.
Some of the best Star Trek has never produced at Star Trek at all.
To prove my point, I’d like to start talking about how great Galaxy Quest is, except that we are blackened every time we discuss Galaxy Quest.
Fortunately, Galaxy Quest Not the only example of something that conveys the essence of Star Trek, non -Star Trek.
Some of the best Star Trek are not even science fiction!
Stimulate your warp drive, or power your quantum flux drive, or just open your mood.
This is the best Star Trek not Star Trek!
Inspired by William Brinkley’s novel of the same name, The last ship In the 2014 television series focused on the USS crew Nathan James, a naval destroyer left alone after a world pandemic removed all governments and militancy.
The show focuses on Captain Tom Chandler, played by Eric Dane, a character in Captain Kirk’s style leading his crew on a mission to save the world.
In The last ship The first season, when the Nathan James is alone and travels the world looking for scientific discoveries to improve the pest, the show plays out just like a great season of Star Trek.
In subsequent seasons The last ship Morphs into something else, but that first one is a great modern military capture on Star Trek’s aesthetic and is worth watching as a single -contained one -season story.
The original Missing in space debuted on television in 1965, a year before Trek Star. Like Trek, the show follows a small group on a tour through the galaxy.
The biggest difference between them is in the dynamics of the crew. Missing in space Primarily focused on the Robinson family, which is part of a colonial group that deviates off track, emphasizing survival narrative in unknown environments over exploration.
There were 90s Missing in space Movie with Matt Leblanc stars, probably not worth watching, and the original series is now pretty.
Fortunately, Netflix recently drew a pretty great restart from the series, which conveys much of what both did Trek Star and the original Missing in space So great.
The 90s Stargate Movie launched an entire TV franchise based on the adventures of humans traveling through Stargates to visit unknown worlds.
Other than visiting alien worlds, Stargate SG-1 quite different from Star Trek. It is not installed in the future and is more military.
However, there are two spinoff shows by Stargate, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate UniverseCapture Trek Star More Vibe.
Stargate Atlantis Set in a lost city, the crew uses as a center for exploration and discovery. It touches many of the familiar themes that make Star Trek great.
In the meantime, Stargate Universe Following a group of human beings trapped on an ancient board star in a distant galaxy with no way home. The series strikes on many of the familiar crew dynamics that Star Trek fans love.
Just a few months before Captain Kirk arrived on screen in 1966, Disney release a different story of exploration called A fantastic cruise.
Instead of exploring outer space, it takes a small ship crew inside the human body, getting boldly where no one has previously gone before in its own way.
A fantastic cruise was the technical wonders of his day. The film’s original trailer identified it as “a new kind of filming experience,” and for once, it wasn’t a hyperbole. It was a fact.
Mind Trek Star. A fantastic cruise stands out like a turning point in sci-fi By exploring a brand new location that has never been done on this scale before. It still catches up as a technical progress and a fun adventure.
Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Series Seaquest DSV Launched first in 1993 on NBC with high hopes and with the intention of all -of the popularity of shows as Star Trek: The next generation and Deep space nine.
It takes the Star Trek formula and applies it to a close future where mankind has developed new underwater exploration technologies.
Seaquize Following a future submarine crew as they explore the depths of the ocean, and also sometimes take part in time travel shenanigans or, in a very strange turn, ends on an alien planet.
Roy Scheider stars as the likeable and similar captain of Picard, Nathan Hale Bridger. There is also a talking dolphin called Darwin, a precursor to the whale whales shown on Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Ridley Scott Film 2012 Prometheus is prequel i Alien and part of the alien franchise. And there are not many things less Star Trek than the alien movies.
With the exception of this one, which, in a very particularly strange way, is a stealthy re -making of Star Trek V: the last border.
The story of both Prometheus and Star Trek V. Means looking for the Creator on a tour led by scientists who have abandoned logic for blind faith and belief. Both films rely on a critical crew betrayal to move the plot forward.
Even Prometheus‘Production design is similar to The last border. The planets they visit look like the same place, and we meet the two scientist characters of the film digging around in a desert.
And of course, in the end, the gods they find in both films are murderous jerks. Embrace the chilling similarities by watching The last border and Prometheus backup.
The orville is the most Star Trek show to hit TV since canceling VentureAnd that’s the creator of Vibe series Seth Macfarlane Nurturing on purpose.
It’s not Star Trek though, so here it’s sitting.
It is about a bunch of explorers wandering their way through the cosmos, encountering the wonders of the universe, and challenging the human spirit. You know, exactly what Star Trek was back when they had the bare guy in the care of the ship. Back when it was still good.
The orville Will scratch the star itching that is not met by Paramount current Trek offerings and sometimes, especially in one season, it’s also very funny.
Based on the book series by author Patrick O’Brian, the film Master and Commander: The far side of the world follow Russell Crowe Like Captain Jack Aubrey, a British Navy officer during the Napoleon Wars. He and his crew get the task of chasing a French ship far more powerful than their own.
That may not sound very Star Trek, but it’s a movie about a ship sailing to the unknown, exploring strange places making scientific discoveries, while also locked in a battle with another ship.
Jack Aubrey from Russell Crowe is perfect Captain Kirk and Paul Bettany, as the ship’s doctor, plays out as a combination of Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock.
Basically, it’s everything you see in a good Star Trek movie, it happens on a wind -powered ship, instead of a warp core.
If we could talk about Galaxy QuestIt could have been number one on this list.
But feel free to punish us for excluding it anyway.
