The best relationship at Star Trek is not a romantic one. Sorry for all of you Riker/Turning and Worf/Dax fans. Across all TV shows, books and movies, the best relationship in Star Trek in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It is between Benjamin Sisko and his son, Jake.

Actors Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofon created real friendship and love towards each other during the run of the series which became instrumental in depicting the relationship between father and son. In particular, Brooks wanted to portray a single black father who was dedicated to his son and maintained a strong, loving relationship in the midst of extreme difficulty.

Benjamin and Jake are openly showcasing love and affection for each other, breaking many expected norms for male characters on TV at the time. The two characters are shown supporting each other, either with Benjamin urging Jake to become a writer or with Jake helping his father start dating again.

Among the chapters highlighting this strong and loving relationship is “The Visitor,” with the recent, the great Tony Todd plays a future version of Jake that lost his father at a young age, and “explorers,” where Benjamin and Jake sail across the stars together in an ancient spacecraft and learn more about each other.

The story of their relationship keeps importance throughout a whole run Trek Star: Deep Space Nine, from the first chapter to the last one. That’s something you can’t necessarily say about many other relationships in the franchise.

Star Trek is full of interesting, compelling and dynamic relationships, like Kirk’s victory, Pigand bones, the playful garak and bashir, or even Picard and Q.

But when I think of the most beloved and effective relationship in the franchise, I always return to this beautiful portrait of father and son who loves each other unconditionally. Watching them together has not lost any of his heart all the years later.

If anything, the relationship between Benjamin and Jake is only strengthened by time. That’s why Giant Freakin Robot calls him a best relationship in Star Trek.
