The man died after he was attacked by a bear in one of the most picturesque mountainous regions of Romania.
The victim, who was traveling on a motorcycle, stopped in the popular tourist zone on the transfaga road on Tuesday morning, the authorities said.
The bear pulled it down the steep ravine from the fall of about 80 meters (262 feet), they added.
“Unfortunately, he was already dead when we arrived,” the BBC said, “said Ion Sanduli.
“The injuries were extremely serious. Although he was in a helmet and a complete protective gear, it was not enough.”
Sanduliu said the victim parked his bike near the sign, which warned not to feed the bears.
“My advice is simple: don’t stop, don’t feed them and keep the distance,” he added.
The animal has not yet been poured, officials said. Investigation of the incident continues.
Romania is home to the largest brown bear in the European Union.
In recent years, meetings with human stations have increased, and several deadly incidents have been calling for clearer rules and investments in the prevention strategy.
Recent studies on the genetic population conducted by the Romanian Ministry of Environment have estimated that the population of the brown bear in the country is from 10,400 to 12 800 – much higher than in previous estimates.
Former Mirkea Fecea’s Minister of Environment considered the optimal sustainable population of about 4,000 bears – approximately a third of the current assessment.
Fechet suggested simplifying the laws to allow local authorities to take more immediate measures, including the ability to pour the bears in residential areas.
The ministry also plans to enter the risk zone cards to better manage the bear’s population by balancing public safety efforts.
Environmentalists say death reflects deeper structural problems in Romania’s wild nature.
Gabriel Paun, founder of the Green Environmental Protection Agent, who agites for the protection of wildlife and against illegal deforestation, stated that the issue was wrongly controlled, not overpopulated.
“The tragedy on the transfagan road is the result of numerous failures: tourists who stop interacting with wild animals, local authorities who do not do enough to return bears to the forest, and the national government – in particular, the Ministry of Environment – without properly implementing the national plan.
Pun said that the bear’s population threatens “climate change, the destruction of habitat and persecution”, adding that Romania became a “key place” for international trophies.
Sandulou believes that more powerful means of deterrent are needed to prevent life loss.
“In my opinion, the decision is simple: higher fines and even prison terms for those who stop to feed bears,” he said.
