In 2015, Ashley Kay’s father died and She inherited a childhood house In Waterford, Wisconsin. At the time, she was 27 years old, working in corporate health care and transition to consulting work, where she worked from 80 to 100 hours a week.

He spent the next three years by traveling during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the trip to South Africa, she received unexpected news that her aunt became ill and she had to return home to Wisconsin.

While Kay returned home, taking care of her aunt, she prepared her childhood house for sale and examined her next step. She thought a lot about trying Van life and live and travel with her dog.
“Traveling on a plane with a dog just sounded like a terrible idea,” she says. “I take a lot of photos, so I knew I wanted something where I could reach more stringent directions.”

Now that her new house was a truck, Kay went to her first adventure: travel to Baj California, Mexico. She stayed there for three months and planned repair, which she would need to make the truck more suitable.

When the truck was ready, Kay decided to travel on the Pan-American highway starting with Denver. The highway stretches from the Gulf of Prudho, Alaska to Ushuai, Argentina.
“This is a truly incredible way to travel because you can set your own pace, and if you find anywhere beautiful and calm, you can stay as long as you want,” Kay says.
“But there are pros and cons in every travel mode and a lot of red tapes and logistics that cross the boundaries. It can be depleting, especially if you are the one. You must find a balance that works for you, but overall it is definitely one of the coolest adventures of my life.”
Lesson # 1 Kay: “Life is too short, so just live”
From life and travel in a truck full -time, Kay visited Mexico, every country of Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and parts of Argentina. In total, it was in more than 20 countries.
“I don’t want to be a cliché and say that this is a dream life because it’s a lot of work and there are many things you need to care and support,” she says.
“But it is really incredible to be able to wake up and just look at the card and say,” Should I sleep in this volcano either go to the jungle or go to the beach? “You have a lot of really beautiful options, so I can’t complain.”

After all this time, Kay says that the biggest lesson she learned is that life is too short.
“Ever since I started traveling, (I learned) life is just too short. You don’t need to go and throw your career to travel the world, but no matter what your dreams and goals in life are just beginning now, and everything else just finds out the goal,” she says.
Kay says that when she was younger, her dad taught her that she was capable of anything.
“I grew up with my dad, raising me and telling me every day:” You can be all that you want when you grow up and you can do anything, “she says.
