Erik Ten has described his dismissal as Bayer Leverkusen as “unprecedented” and stated that he was never “given” the confidence he needed after being looted only three parties in his term.
The former head of Manchester United signed a two -year agreement in the summer to succeed Xabi Alonso, who marched to Real Madrid.
But Leverkusen’s leadership decided to act quickly after a mixed start: a 4-0 DFB-Pokal victory, a 2-1 loss against Hoffenheim and a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen in which they surrendered a two-goal lead.
In a statement through their second Football agency, Ten hag expressed their frustration in the decision: “Participating in ways with a coach after only two league games have no precedents.
“A new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set standards, shape the squad and leave his imprint in the style of play. Unfortunately, the direction was not ready to grant -the time and confidence I needed, which I deeply regret.”
Leverkusen lost key players in the summer – Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz left for Liverpool, while Captain Granite Xhaka joined Sunderland, leaving ten hags with the task of rebuilding.
The Dutchman had previously been dismissed by Manchester United in October 2024, despite winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and CUP in 2024.
Ten Hag thanked Leverkusen’s supporters in his statement, but concluded: “I think this was never a relationship based on mutual confidence. The clubs that trusted me have been rewarded with success and silver.”
