Gervonta Davis showed off his blinding hand speed today, working with his trainer, Barry Hunter, in the gloves, preparing for his WBA lightweight title defense against Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Davis looks great in gloves, but he’s overplayed because his opponent, super featherweight Roach, is underpowered and outmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank was working like a dog and fighting someone with real talent. Then you’re interested in seeing him hit the gloves, but not when it’s another cherry pick like the rest during Davis’ 12-year career.
Tank Davis’ last seven opponents
– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– I read Santa Creu
That’s a mediocre group right there, and none of them are relevant lightweight fighters, not one. So it’s great that Tank Davis is great at hitting gloves, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. These types of fights should be free because these are matches designed to be mismatched.
Tank’s form closely resembled that of Floyd Mayweather Jr, his former promoter, in his training with gloves. But the two couldn’t be further apart in fighting style. Fortunately, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is much more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr.
Still, Tank looks a LOT like Mayweather with his cherry picking in addition to his gloves workouts. Floyd was the best at picking them off and getting away from dangerous predators during his career. Now, Tank follows his safety first plan.
Fans want to see the tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting the opposition that has a chance to beat him. Davis or his management have always picked fighters where he was a big favorite.
They want to see Tank fight one of these sharks:
– Shakur Stevenson
– Keyshawn Davis
—Andy Cruz
– Edwin Dels Santos
– Vasily Lomachenko
– William Zepeda
– Bakhram Murtazaliev
– Sebastià Fundora
– Serhiy Bohachuk
– Israil Madrimov
