Australian police continues a massive search for a strongly armed man who is suspected of shooting and murdering two officers in a rural city.
Ten police officers were fired on Tuesday after a trip to the rape – about 300 km (186 miles) northeast of Melbourne – to execute a warrant for allegedly sex crimes.
Almost 24 hours later, police called the suspect a local man Desy Freman, 56, and confirmed that “still is still at large”.
Police opened officers, helicopters and armored vehicles to the area and warned the locals to stay inside until Mr. Freeman was caught.
“We pour every resource into search,” said Police Chief Commissioner Victoria Mike Bush.
“Be careful, keep yourself safe.”
He said earlier that two officers were “killed in cold blood” and identified them as a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior police officer-they said their names would not be released until relatives were informed.
Mr. Bush said that the third officer who was injured in the shooting was not in the operation, and although he “significantly damaged” he would recover.
He also addressed the previous reports of local media that Mr. Freeman took his family hostage, adding that the police talked to their partner and children, and they were safe.
The authorities did not see Mr. Freman because he fled after firing and focused on the “dense bush” near his home.
“He will know this area better than us, so we put each expert with the support of local knowledge,” Mr. Bush said.
“We understand that he is well understood by Bushcraft, which gives us a challenge.”
Surrounded by heavily wooded hills in the Australian Alps, the rape is only about an hour from the border of the new South Wales.
Mr. Bush added that the police are looking for a “very, very wide” area, as well as studying whether Mr. Freeman could leave the state -although there is no information at this point to assume that it happened.
