Supreme Court rules on challenge to Delaware, Maryland gun laws

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the appeals gun laws in Delaware and Maryland.

Judges rejected an appeal by a group of gun enthusiasts and firearms advocates in Delaware to block the state’s ban on assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines after a lower court refused to grant a preliminary injunction against the ban.

Delaware’s gun safety laws passed in 2022 ban a variety of semi-automatic “assault” long guns, including the AR-15 and AK47, although it allows those who owned such weapons before the law was passed to keep their firearms under certain conditions, reports Reuters.

High courtwhich has a conservative 6-3 majority, also declined to hear a case challenging Maryland’s handgun licensing requirements, which require people to take safety training, be fingerprinted and pass background checks before buying a handgun.

The challengers argued that the gun law violated the Second Amendment because it made it too difficult for people to obtain guns.

The law was adopted based on the results of 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, where 20 first-graders and six teachers were killed.

A three-judge appeals court panel later struck down the law after a landmark 2022 Supreme Court decision that expanded firearms rights and said gun laws must be firmly rooted in the nation’s historical traditions, though the full 4th Circuit Court of Appeals US courts later reinstated the law after a majority found it consistent with historical rules firearms.
