Superman flies home but the box office tells an important story

Superman Now available for rent or purchase at home on Premium Video-Ar-Demand Services (PVOD) after just 35 days in a theatrical exhibition. James Gunn’s sweeping start to the new DC Universe (DCU) still plays on well over 2,000 screens domestically and continues to perform with solid longevity, but the decision was made to put it on PVOD after only a month and change.

There are many pieces worth picking separately with the PVOD release schedule from SupermanAnd I’ll get my beak sharpened in just a few. However, what I really want to focus on is an upcoming box office this weekend and how we will see if this has any significant impact on the film’s ongoing run with people going to theater.

The premium price for patience

I always said that I would be willing to pay premium prices to watch a movie as Superman At home while he was also in theaters. I love the theatrical experience (even when does not love me back) But I’m on a point in my life where there are plenty of new release movies that I’d rather watch in the comfort of my own home. While that immediate satisfaction has not become part of the users’ landscape, the release window for studio movies has become something of crap shooting.

Many viewers are right waiting for a movie to come available for watching home either as a rent/digital purchase or when it is added to anyway stream Service catalog to which they subscribe. The problem is that those schedules change from film to film, so it can be difficult as a user to keep up or even care to keep track of a particular film home.

What does this have to do specifically Superman? It is certainly surprising to see him at home relatively fast while still doing solid business in theaters. There are explanations out there, even from James Gunn Himself, but this feels like a decision that was in the cards before the film’s theatrical release.

The brand that comes first

There is the fact that the next Prestige DCU project, Pacifist Season 2, a week out of its release. Managing some brand and “flow” consistency seems to be part of the strategy with movement Superman to a video home so fast. I do not think that is the best option available for the film’s continued success in theaters, but I can see the game played.

DCU brand needs to remain perpetual in the minds of the population and Superman Winding up means the next thing needs to wind up. Superman Could be an independent success but its power position immediately decreases once that marketing space is needed on the next thing.

I’m ready to bet Superman Makes very well on PVOD for the coming future before being hit down to regular prices. It is a popular film and continues to prove so with a steady flow of demonstrations in the film theater.
