The legendary Batter Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the IPL franchises for favoring young players not proven about consistent interpreters of the household cricket. Gavaskar stated that IPL franchises should give importance to the Syed Mushtaq T20 trophy, calling it a much more competitive and reliable reference point.
In recent years, multiple franchise leagues have emerged at the state level, with some of their players winning points in IPL teams. The 2025 season was notable for the rise of several talents without a lid. Punjab Kings (PBKs), who ended up as a runner -up, regularly campaigned for six to seven players without any play in his XI performance.
Sunil Gavaskar urged the IPL teams to rethink their talent approach. The former Captain of India said that the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy is more competitive. He added that high -standard domestic competitions should be considered during the auction.

“This year’s IPL showed that relying on the performances of the T20 State leagues is not the way to enter the auction,” the 75 -year -old young man wrote in his column by mid -day.
“It is much better to go through the acts of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, as these games are much more competitive than those of the State’s T20 leagues. In addition, do not go on board what is seen in tournaments under 19,” he added.
Sunil Gavaskar came up with his concern for young Cricters to lose their motivation after gaining profit from IPL at the beginning of his career. He said that some domestic leagues do little to prepare for the IPL’s competitive demands.
“”The level of competition there is much lower than that of the IPL and many young people who did not usually make -so much money lose their motivation and are very happy to be around instead of performing, “said Gavaskar.
“What is needed is to see when the performances of battles and bowling arrived. What was the situation in which the batters scored and the bowls took the doctors, at the end of the day, the IPL will be completely different. Here the temper will be put into play. The runs and doctors have to come when it matters.”
Sunil Gavaskar also criticized the mindset of some young players who prioritize strike rates for shocking contributions. Gavaskar emphasized that many aggressive strikers of the state T20 leagues fought at the IPL, unable to perform game winning performances.
“Some will justify scoring 15 in five deliveries, as it is a 300 strike rate, but it was perhaps important for the side that beat another 15 deliveries and got 40 and led the team to win.”
“Hitting a six of the first ball on a face and going out to the next ball gives a 300 strike rate, but how does this help this? Many of the so -called six strokes of the state T20 leagues came to a crop in the IPL and could not take their teams to win,” added Gavaskar.
Several young players, including Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Digvesh Rathi, Vapraj Nigam and Ashwani Kumar, made a strong impression during the season. These emerging talents were constantly included in the XIS of their teams and took advantage of the opportunities given to them.
