Coach Stephen Edwards says that if Shakur Stevenson gets the fight he has been pressing against Gervonta Davis, he will have to make him a “risk free” performance to prevent it from being cut.
Edwards doubts whether Shakur’s judges, first and puncturing, will be appreciated by the judges enough to give him a decision victory over the Light WBA champion, Tanc Davis (30-0-1, 28 kos).
Stephen feels that judges and fans at this time do not appreciate the style of struggle used by the light champion of WBC Lightweight (23-0, 11 kos). Their only way to win is by decision. Shakur does not punch him strong enough to try to get out of Gervonta.
Despite using Mayweather-ESQUE’s struggle, Shakur has won three World Division titles. However, a great reason is that he did not fight the great opposition to win these belts. It would be a different story if Shakur went against the best at 126, 130 and 135 now. It is likely that it reached empty in each division unless you chose the weakest champions.
“I don’t think the style of struggle that Shakur Stevenson should fight to win this struggle, I don’t think that is enough in this age,” said Stephen Edwards to Sean Zittel On the style of amateur access and it is not achieved that Shakur Stevenson would not work with the judges to fight against Gervonta Davis.
Shakur’s struggle is from Mayweather’s time and judges were more willing to tolerate this type of style at that time. Sport has evolved from Floyd, and judges focus more on power on power features unless an A-Side fighter. We saw that Dmitry Bivol’s decision won about Artur Beeterbiev on February 22. If Bivol was not popular, he would have lost because Beterbiev landed the toughest shots.
Stevenson has to use his style of struggle for amateur points because he cannot punch enough to slide with Gervonta without being eliminated.
“I think he will have to fight a risk wrestling, score points, a non-violent struggle, sink the struggle and not risk. He only has to set points like amateur boxing,” Edwards continued on how Shakur has to fight Davis’s tank.
“Don’t try to put any power in your shots. You just have to play Gervonta and get out of the fight. I think he can win, but I don’t think that style of struggle is appreciated enough to win. Shakur is not a great punch, but it is good to punch on the body. Gervonta Davis is a counterpoint teacher. If you reach your body, it will cut you.
“I don’t know if the judges will appreciate Shakur enough. He would be a fool to try to change his style to fight Gervonta because, if he does, he could cut himself and everyone is laughing at him,” said Edwards.
Judges may not need to mark the struggle because, with tank’s punch power, it will be loaded in everything he throws. It will not respect the power of Shakur as Lamont Roach did because he can only generate power power when he goes to the body. Stevenson is not crazy enough to go to the body of Gervonta as he did against Josh Padley in his fight on February 22, because he contrasts with something big sooner or later.
