The area where Elon Musk SpaceX is running on the southern tire of Texas will officially become a city called Starbase.
Residents approved by including the stain of land as a new municipality in the Saturday election.
Most of the 283 voters are entitled to SpaceX staff. The results published on the Internet in Cameron count show 212 votes against the six opposite. Billionaire Musk wrote: “Starbase, Texas is now a real city!” On its social media platform X.
The new city covers about 1.6 sq.m miles (3.9 km), which was rarely inhabited before SpaceX started buying land in the area in 2012.
The city government will consist of the mayor and two commissioners who will have power over planning, taxation and other local problems. But some neighboring residents opposed this measure and accused the campaign to harm the local environment.
Ever since SpaceX has started buying land in the area, housing and Spacex facilities have gone, and Mr. Musk resides. Other evidence of the presence of the tycoon includes a road called Memes Street and a giant bust itself, which has recently been assembled.
About 500 people are estimated, they live nearby.
The opportunity to include in the city rumored, over the years before the petition filed in December 2024 paid the way to vote on Saturday.
The first mayor of Starbase will be Bobby Peden, Vice President SpaceX. Peden led the non -alternative, like two other residents with SpaceX Ties, which would fill the two places of the authorized.
BBC contacted Mr. Peden for comments.
According to 5,000 people, Starbase will become a city C – a category of municipality less than 5,000 and an appointment that, among other things, will allow officials to charge real estate tax up to 1.5%, reports the municipal league in Texas.
The bill currently wrapped through the Texas legislative body may give officials of the new city the opportunity to close the local highway and restrict access to the nearest Boko Chika beach and Boko Chika State Park while launching missiles and other campaigns.
Currently, closure around SpaceX is launched in Cameron county, which includes a neighboring city of Bransville and a resort city on the island of South Padre.
The result of the voting can create a noise between the county and Starbase officials about access to Boko Chika’s beach as SpaceX looks to increase the number of launches on its Texas website from five to 25 a year.
The top official in the Cameron district, Judge Eddie Trevin -Jul, opposes the state bill that would allow Starbase to control.
In recent years, Musk moved to many of his operations and corporate headquarters from California to Texas, citing more favorable regulation and counteraction to politics where the California Democratic Party is dominated.
The headquarters of his companies X and the sad are now on the outskirts of Bastrop, a small city near the capital of Austin and about five and a half hours north of Starbase.
Unlike Starbase, development outside Austin does not include much new housing for companies – most of whom live in Bastrape or other surrounding communities.
Environmental groups criticized SpaceX’s influence on the nearest wildlife, and they say the company has increased light pollution and filled the garbage area with missile launches.
In 2024, the company was fined nearly $ 150,000 (113,000 pounds) to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on the quality of the wastewater.
The company called the fines the result of “disagreements over documents” and supports it, according to environmental laws. BBC turned to SpaceX for comments.
