star wars Actor Angus McInnes, best known for his role as John “Dutch” Wander in two films in the franchise, has died. He was 77.
“Our hearts are broken. He was at home surrounded by love and we had tremendous support. We thank everyone for the wonderful tributes,” the McInnes family wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital.
“Even in his last month, he remained strong, displaying that unique sense of humor that could shed light on the darkest of situations,” McInnes’ longtime manager said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“I will always cherish his cheeky laugh and his incredible talent as an actor. We have lost a true legend. Rest in peace and grow in glory.”

In a statement shared on the actor’s Facebook page on Monday, McInnes’ family confirmed that he died on December 23.
“To all Angus fans around the world, it is with broken hearts that we write the following: Angus McInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and actor, passed away on December 23, 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love,” they wrote.

McInnes played Wander, a spaceship pilot who was the leader of the Rebellion’s Golden Squadron in the franchise’s first film in 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. The Canadian native returned to the franchise to voice his character in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which noted his last film role.
In a Facebook post, McInnes’ family recalled the actor’s love for Star Wars fans.
“For Angus, Star Wars fans held a special place in his heart,” they shared. “He enjoyed meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories and sharing your passion for the saga. He was constantly humbled, awed and honored by the admiration and passion of fans and the convention community.”

McInnes’ career in film and television spanned more than four decades. Born on October 27, 1947 in Ontario, he made his first film appearance in 1975 in the Canadian sci-fi sports film Rollerball.
The actor continued to act in a series other movies including Superman II, The Witness, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Atlantic City, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, Eyes Wide Shut, Black Dahlia, and Captain Phillips” and others.
His television credits include roles in Space: 1999, The Little Tramp, The New Statesman, Vikings and River City.

“His work touched countless lives and he was proud to be a part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences around the world,” his family wrote in a statement.
“Angus was more than an actor – he was a kind, thoughtful and generous soul who brought warmth and humor to the lives of all who knew him,” they added.
“He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow actors, as well as his fans around the world – his family thanks everyone.”
