Last year, Star Trek William Shatner icon interviewed Canada Press Where he revealed something surprising: he would not necessarily rule out a return to the franchise that made it famous. He doesn’t want to come back for just Cameo and just want Kirk to return if “a valid reason for the character appeared.” Well, the reason why he needs to return now is simple: Star Trek is falling creatively free, and Captain Kirk’s show may be the only thing that can save this franchise.
The precedent for a Kirk show is set by Star Trek: PicardThe side effect that brought back Jean-Luc Picard for misadventures with friends old and new. Unfortunately, that show was a messy failure saved by only a last season dedicated to a fan service. Kirk Skill Show could succeed Picard Failed, though, just because Kirk has more potential for character development.
Captain Picard was a pretty dynamic character who evolved a bit throughout Star Trek: The next generation. He learned to disappoint his hair (as it were) and bonded with his crew, all while exploring the limits of the duty and final of human imagination. The films continued to evolve Picard, showing that he overcome the loss of his brother, his nephew, and even his strange clone.
That is why Picard Which was such an uneven show: there was so little left to explore with Picard that the series had to invent a bunch of strange drama, including Picard becoming Non Grata’s persona for caring for Romulans after their planet was destroyed. Oh, and the writers gave him a suicidal mother and ancestor who was almost killed by data ancestor (or at least, Daddy’s ancestor).
That play was often strange and gross, and this attempt to add new depths to Picard was threatened to undo all those years of character development on TNG. The same cannot be said of Kirk, a character with a mysterious past with plenty of detail worth exploring. The Strange new worlds Writers clearly agree because they have not been able to resist the exploration of Kirk’s life and backstore whenever possible.
If we had a Kirk show, we could learn more about the aspects of his past suggesting but never seen on screen. For example, I would love to learn more about Kirk’s time learning at Starfleet Academywhere he probably has a reputation as a crazy teacher of trapped (not Maverick rule cutter). Speaking of Starfleet Academy, it would be fun to learn more about how Kirk beat Kobayashi Maru’s ultimate Prime universe, which was mainly treated as a fast gag in the Kelvinverse and deserves more on -screen coverage.
There are other deep literature pieces that I would love to learn more about, including that it is an eye for Kodos slaughtering 4,000 colonists in one of the most stunning mass murders of the 23rd century. But what would Kirk’s solo show really look like? One option is to bring Kirk back to life because he is the only one who can deal with a threat from his past (personally, I rooted for the sudden appearance of a fleet of planet destruction).
By the way, the idea of resurrecting Kirk is not as crazy as it sounds because Picard revealed that Section 31 is unexplained keeping Kirk’s dead body in a storage in the same place where they keep a bunch of old Android Noonien soong research. Picard is currently running around in a robot golem body provided by one of Soong’s children, so it’s not all that Crazy to think Kirk’s mind could be resurrected and placed inside a robot body. This could allow some clever writing (perhaps having to relate to cellular decay or soong incomplete notes) to explain why Kirk came back looking so old.
If William Shatner Don’t want to make all the drainage acting scenes that such a show would need, I have a simpler idea: an anthology show where the older Kirk is a host, telling someone (maybe Carol Marcus, maybe just a personal log) for his misconduct when he was younger. And then we would see those stories brought to life by Paul Wesley, who plays Junior Kirk on Strange new worlds. Of the weighting Could even be more like going for such a show because it would be a cheaper and safer option than making a full TOS restart, which has long been said to be in the works.
However they do, the paramount needs to bring back William Shatner back to Trek Star with a Kirk show. After all these decades, Captain Shatner is still the most well -known character sci-fi Franchise ever created. Now that Paramount wants to bring Star Trek back bigger and better than ever before, the choice is simple: they need to go back to the past to bring back the same man who can help this franchise boldly to get into the future.
