Star Trek: Next Generation Had one of the best ensemble castings in television history, but some of their characters were better used than others. For example, the counselor has an exotic background and powerful empathic capabilities, but it exists in most chapters to look pretty and identify the obvious (“I sense danger, Captain!”). And the turning actor, Marina Sirtis, called out Star Trek’s producers for this character treatment when discussing how his beef role in the original script for “the enemy” was shattered down to almost nothing.
Marina Sirtis and his Trek Star Problems
In “The Enemy,” Geordi La Forge was stuck on a planet where his visor did not work and had to join Romulan. Marina Sirtis he had little to do in this Star Trek: Next Generation Episode, but she says the original script has a flip and geordi on the planet and turns have to do cool things like disabling Romulan. “At last, I had to do something interesting and different,” he said, but “when the last script not only wasn’t on the planet, but I had a single line at the end of the show – and that was actually broken.”
In terms of this chapter, Marina Sirtis was voicing something that many Trek Star Fans have noticed over the years: namely, that her character has little to do constantly. On the popular trek podcast The largest generation. It is a fair criticism, and based on his comments, one that Sirtis himself shares.
The actor’s comments were published in Captain Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Cruisesand they demonstrate how cynical she had become about producing Tng chapters. For example, she noted that she was not supposed to read the original draft of “The Enemy” because “we are not allowed to see” early scripts to avoid “conversations like this.” This rule was not limited to Marina Sirtis, as other Star Trek actors would be equally disappointed to know that they were supposed to have a big role in a chapter where they hardly appear.
However, this stunned so much more for the actor to turn because she traditionally got so little to do. So, when he read about turning Romulan out, Marina Sirtis said it was “very excited about” this Star Trek episode. His role was then reduced so much that she barely spoke (contrary to the actor’s words, spoke in the episode, but it was only two lines). According to her, “that’s the kind of thing that happens” on the show “and I wouldn’t.”
It is arguably the turning councilor to have some of the most interesting storytelling potential The next generation: She is an alien with special capabilities that once had a passionate romance with the Commander Riker, second in control USS Enterprise. Unfortunately, though, the show’s writers never knew what to do with the character of Marina Sirtis, which is why it ended with the most misused character in this popular spinoff Star Trek. In fact, we would love to borrow the betazed abilities of her character because it may be the only way to learn what the writers and producers thought in wasting her character so thoroughly.
