South Korea has instructed some of its largest companies and promising to start a national fundamental AI model using mainly domestic technologies, in a rare step to keep the country with the United States and China.

The project will be submitted by South Korean

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) in Korea announced that five consortiums were selected to develop models. One manages SK Telecom, the telecommunications giant in Korea and includes a Krafton game firm and Uprisings to run the chip Among other companies.

There are other teams led by other well -known firms, including LG and Naver.

“We are experiencing an important place in terms of our technological development. Thus, Korea, at the national level, focuses on the fact that we have laid the technical basis to have our competitiveness,” said Kim Tuyun, the head of the Sk Telecom department, which also heads the CNBC consortium.

“Korea has many organizations that would succeed in creating a large industry. And we could clearly see the possibility that we are very capable of creating a good AI stack,” Kim added.

“Stack” refers to different technologies that make up a product or other technology.

Road Card AI Models

SK Telecom is not new in the AI model game. Campaign launched the beta -the edge of its first chat Based on its own big linguistic model in 2022 under the name “A.” pronounced “point”. Since then, he has developed more advanced versions of the model and chat.

The SK Telecom consortium plans to release its first model by the end of the year, Kim said. Initially, it will focus on the market in South Korea, but can be used worldwide. The model will be open source, that is, it will use and build for free, potentially with some licensing requirements.

Any AI models coming out of the South Korea project will face Offers open source from Chinese firms allegedly Alibaba and Deepseek.

Creating the AI model will not be a problem given that SK Telecom and already proven services have already been proven.

A great task will be to convey models that can compete with those who come out of the AI border laboratories that pour billions of dollars in research and development. Another question will be the craving among developers to rely on these models. This has succeeded in other open source models, such as Alibaba.

Kim Sk Telecom said the purpose is to create models that can compete with these other companies.

“Our first goal is to create a very strong modern model with open source, and we already have an example of those open source models that are at the same level in terms of performance with these great technologies (players) such as Openai or Anthropic,” said Knbc.

He added that there would be models of different sizes that can be used by different branches.

The AI National Model with open source can also give benefits, giving businesses across the country access to the latest technology without relying on the technological giant from abroad.

Meanwhile, South Korean AI models can be located as an alternative to us and Chinese systems.

“In addition to internal benefits, the proven Sovereign AI model presents significant export potential. Just like Korea has succeeded in memory circuits, it can become a valuable product for other countries seeking alternatives to us or the Chinese system, enhancing Korea’s position in the AI world landscape,” said patience.

AI sovereignty

At the heart of this push from South Korea is the concept of “sovereign II”, which has gained craving for many countries.

This is the opinion that AI models and services that governments see as a strategic value must be built in the country and work on the servers located at the domestic level.

“All major countries are increasingly concerned about the II sovereignty as the US and the Chinese Vie for AI domination,” said the patience of the Futurum group.

“Given the increasing influence of II on such critical sectors as healthcare, finance, defense and government, countries cannot afford to control their digital intelligence for foreign organizations.”
