Sony Pictures Boss Blames Critics for Spider-Man Spin-Off Failures

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times Looking back on his seven years at the helm of Sony Pictures, outgoing CEO Tony Vinciquerra talked about the studio’s successes during his tenure, as well as his disappointments. Which includes the final movie to launch while he is still the leader: Kraven the Hunter.

U Spider-Man villain spin-off with Aaron Taylor-Johnson was “probably the worst launch we’ve had in 7 1/2 years (I’ve been at Sony), so it didn’t work well, which I didn’t understand, because the movie. it’s not a bad movie,” he said.

In a follow-up question, Vinciquerra was asked more about The requirements –as another note, Spidey-adjacent 2024 version: Mrs. Web.

“We just touch Mrs. Web for a moment,” he said.Mrs. Web underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified. It wasn’t a bad movie, and it did well on Netflix.”

He continued, leaning on hitting the press Mrs. Webbankruptcy and others. “For some reason, the press decided they didn’t want to make these movies The needs and Mrs. Weband critics just destroyed. They also did it with They comebut the public loved it They come and done They come a massive blow. These are not terrible movies. They were destroyed by critics in the press, for some reason.”

(Morbiusreleased in 2022, did not receive a mention.)

On the broken tomatoes, Kraven the Hunter has a 15% “Tomatometer” rating from critics; Fans of the film gave it a 73% on the “Popcornmeter” scale. Mrs. WebThe rankings are worse (11% from critics; 55% from fans); while the more recent ones They come movie, Venom: The Last Dancehad the most agreement between critics and the public (41% vs. 81%).

However, just because fans voting on Rotten Tomatoes might have positive feelings, it doesn’t necessarily translate into box office gold. Most recently, Kraven the Hunteras Vinciquerra himself acknowledged, It didn’t leave much of a mark at the box office.

The outgoing CEO may not have to worry much more, but he is definitely aware that everything”Spider-Man The spin-off strategy, which Sony embraced so enthusiastically in the beginning, needs to be examined going forward. “I think we need to rethink it, just because it’s snakebite,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “If we put another one, it will be destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.”

Spider-Man 4at least, it’s on the horizon: Tom Holland returns as the web-slinger in a film directed by Dustin Daniel Cretton arriving on July 24, 2026.
