The government stated that the government held a strike against Islamist militants while fighting the control over the strategic central city.
“Well-coordinated” strike on Adan Yabaal, north of Mogadysh capital, took place a few hours after Al-Shabab conducted a search in a city used as a key starting platform for military operations.
Among the 12 militants who died in airstrike were several senior fighters from the al-Qaeda group, the Somali Ministry of Information said in a statement on x.
Recent fights are against the backdrop of fears from the Renaissance of the Jihadist in Somalia after the reinforcement of the militant, including the one who sent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the convoy.
Al-Shabab, which controls most of the South and Central Somalia, has been fighting the government for almost 20 years. It seeks to turn the federal government and create an Islamist state.
The peacekeeping forces under the leadership of the African Union helped push jihadists to defend in 2022 and 2023, but the group remains a great threat, despite many hostilities against it.
The Somali government insists that the group has been weakened.
Airosts late on Wednesday from the Somali Armed Forces and the US command (Africom) “aims to neutralize the threat” militants representing the Ministry of Information.
“The target strike struck the site used by militants as a gathering and repository,” the saying said, “It is important that there were no civil victims.”
Adan Jabal, in the Medium Saber region, was confiscated al-Shabab in 2016 before being restored by government forces in 2022.
Heavy fighting began early on Wednesday after al-Shabab fighters searched the city using heavy explosives.
The group later stated that she had captured the city. Two locals told AFP that the militants took control of Adan Jabal.
The government did not say who is in control of the city now.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the city last month and met military commanders, emphasizing its strategic importance in the fight against militants.
In a separate incident, the National Army stated that at least 35 soldiers were killed on Thursday after they tried to attack the army base, the ministry said.
President Mohamud downgraded al-Shabab’s success, saying that random failures of the battle were inevitable. He claimed that his government was determined to defeat the militants.
