The American Airlines flight returned to Harry Ray International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, shortly after takeoff after the smoke from the left engine registered.
The airline said the maintenance team did not reveal evidence of the fire in the engine, but the aircraft was taken out of operation.
The injuries have not been reported, and the Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident.
