Shubman Gill blocked from Indian T20 Captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav

Former Indian Wasim Jaffer’s ex-commentator shared his thoughts on the T20i configuration of India ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup, especially on the form of Captain Suryakumar Yadav and the growing presence of the Vice-Capitan Shubman Gill.

Wasim Jaffer believes that Suryakumar Yadav’s position as Captain T20i of India is not in danger despite the rapid increase in Shubman Gill, but his inconsistency with the bat while directing the side is still a real concern, and he must approach it before things slip out of his hands.

Since taking over T20i patron of India, Suryakumar Yadav has managed only 558 runs in 22 T20is. These numbers are below expectations for a player in his caliber, with his last series against England especially worrying, where he managed only 28 runs to an average of 5.60 and two ducks.

The commentator said that Suryakumar had highlighted the leg game and was not making the most of the opportunities for marking to the sight.

Wasim Jaffer was quoted by The Times of India: “His fallen numbers (while leading India) are a concern. Not getting the runs is a worry. In the last international he played, he sought to score mostly behind Square next to his leg. His shot selection was not on the brand.”

Wasim Jaffer hopes that suryakumar yadav silence their doubts

However, the change of whistle on the right to IPL 2025 offered some stimulus, as it began to find currents through the floor again, but it must be shown in the Asia Cup 2025.

Jofffer said, “ but since then he has worked in his game and, as we saw, he was a completely different player in the IPL.He also started scoring offside. When Surya has shotgun around the wick, there is not much that the bowls can do it. Then there is no room for the bowls. He has done well at the IPL; we hope they continue to continue.

Wasim Jaffer says Shubman Gill’s quote is not a threat to Suryakumar Yadav

On the other hand, the elevation of Shubman Gill as Vice-Capitan has been considered a sign of confidence in its potential for leadership. The 26 -year -old, who has also led India in tests, continues to strengthen his reputation with great performances and a quiet presence at the top as a pattern.

But Jaffer emphasized that having Gill as Vice-Capitan does not mean that the captain is under pressure, but he shows the long-term view of selectors for larger responsibilities, as Jasprit Bumrah is carefully managed and Hardik Pandya is not currently in the image.

He was signed by saying, “Each tour, each series, you have a vice-chic. It does not mean that the captain is threatened. Selectors have made it clear: Bumrah cannot play all the series, so he is out. Hardik? They don’t look at him now. This leaves Shubman and maybe Shreyas (Iyer) when he is behind.”

However, the former Filador of England, Monty Panesar, said that Indian selectors could go from Suryakumar and deliver the white ball captaincy to Gill if he does not work well or fails to win the Asia Cup 2025. He also predicted that Gill would be the captain of the whole format of India once Rohit Sharma retires.
