Veteran IPL Pàter Sandeep Sharma recently opened on speculations around Shreyas Iyer replacing Suryakumar Yadav as Captain T20i of India. Sandeep stated that bringing a franchise to an IPL final should not be the criterion for captaining the national team of Cricket, calling the meaningless debate.

Speaking to Cricraker, Sandeep Sharma said that the franchise leadership is not a point of reference for international captaincy. He said that Suryakumar Yadav is not a captain in the IPL and called for the discussion about Shreyas Iyer “meaningless”.

“Look, this debate he (Iyer), as Captain, brought his team to the finals does not make sense. Surya is not doing the captaincy of any franchise. So it is not the criterion that the captain on the Indian side“, Sandeep said.
“And for the last three years, Rohit was not doing the captaincy of any franchise. But still, he was the captain of the Indian Team T20, and on a day he still has the same captain. And he was the captain of the three test formats. So they are not the criteria of what you do in IPL,” he added.

Sandeep Sharma said to captain an IPL side and leader India are two very different responsibilities. He stated that while the franchise cricket involves guiding a combination of domestic players and abroad, the international cricket requires managing a selected squad at the highest level.

“In IPL, you have a lot of domestic players, many young players. Some of them come from abroad. But here you are choosing someone who manages 15 people better here.”
