Ar Buffy the Vampire Slayerthe title character faced many difficult decisions over the years, but perhaps the most difficult was choosing who her heart belonged to: Angel, the ghost vampire with a soul, or Spike, the bad boy vampire who reluctantly joined the Scooby Gang and even have a soul of its own.

Debates over which choice is the right choice still rage throughout the community, with fans rooting for either Bangel (Buffy/Angel) or Spuffy (Spike/Buffy). While fans may never arrive at a definitive answer, Buffy the actor Sarah Michelle Gellar did. In an old Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, he chose Angel over Spike.

Buffy, Angel, and Spike

If you have never watched a Buffy episode or in occasional reruns, a primer may be needed on how Angel and Spike became romantic prospects for Gellar’s character in the first place. In short, Angel was her love interest from the very first season, and the show shamelessly plumbed the depths of romantic melodrama with the star-crossed tale of a vampire and Vampire Slayer falling in love. Spike, meanwhile, was introduced as Angel’s enemy and former companion in Season 2, and began developing feelings for Buffy in Season 5, two seasons after Angel left Sunnydale for her own spin-off.

Buffy didn’t see much of Angel (outside of occasional cameos) after his spin-off began, which is how Spike became a mainstay of the cast. Cordelia’s resident mean daughter had also left Buffy and joined Angel as another familiar face in Los Angeles, location Angel. Because of this, showrunner Joss Whedon brought Marsters in regularly Buffyfourth season to fill the hilariously antagonistic role that Cordelia once did, though the evil vamp eventually developed feelings for Buffy which led to their (literally and metaphorically) destructive relationship in Season 6.

Ironically enough, BuffyThe final episode did nothing to quiet speculation about whether Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character should be Angel or Spike. Earlier in the episode, she has a heart-to-heart with Angel about her future, confirming that Spike is not “boyfriend” but that he is “in my heart.” She admits that she’s not ready for a relationship yet and wasn’t “thinking that far ahead,” but hints that she and Angel might have a future together again.

This scene might make you think that Buffy will end up choosing Angel over Spike, but things get complicated when Spike sacrifices himself to save the world. Before he dies, Buffy tells Spike “I love you,” to which he replies “no, you don’t, but thanks for saying it.” There you have it, folks: in the one Buffy episode, our Slayer hinted at a romantic future with Angel a she pledged her love to Spike, forever leaving fans questioning who she should have ended up with in the end.

However, the Buffy actor Sarah Michelle Gillard thinks Angel is the only logical choice over Spike. On his Reddit AMA, one fan asked “Spike or Angel” and elaborated with “ANGEL.” Later, another Redditor asked the same question and reaffirmed her answer: “Still an angel.”

Hearing that the woman who brought Buffy Summers to life prefers Angel to Spike might be enough to put an end to the non-stop fan fighting over the issue. However, most fans will probably continue to pick their battle lines based on everything from which actor got the best performance to who had the best hair. That last one is a bit unfair, though… as all Spuffy fans know, Captain Peroxide has the best to do, and we’ll always bet on this blonde bear to win Buffy’s heart over a hole Boreanaz of blood sucking.
