Sarah Ferguson opens up about the impact that two back-to-back cancer diagnoses have had on her mental health.

“It was difficult. I’m generally a positive person but cancer is like a bomb going off in your life,” Sarah Ferguson, 65, told The Times in an interview published on Friday, January 17. “One diagnosis is enough to deal with, but I had two within a year. I don’t mind admitting that my mind has gone to some dark places, reflecting on my own mortality.”

Ferguson announced in June 2023 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine mammogram. She later had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Six months later, in January 2024, the Duchess announced that she had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

“Her dermatologist asked for a number of moles to be removed and analyzed at the same time as the Duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy, one of which has been identified as cancerous,” said a representative of a member of the royal family in a statement to Us Weekly at the time.
