San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie promised a concerned resident that he would clean up the streets ahead of his term in office after a mayoral election focused on homelessness, crime and drug overdoses.
“Clean up the streets and the homeless, please,” a woman told Lurie during a walking tour of the city, according to Wall Street Journal. Lurie replied, “We’re going.”
Lurie, the first-time candidate, heir to Levi Strauss and founder of an anti-poverty nonprofit, said on the campaign trail that “it’s time to end the notion that lawlessness is an acceptable part of life in San Francisco.” Lurie beat the incumbent Mayor of London Breed in November.
“We’re the greatest city in the world when we’re at our best,” Lurie said during the walk, according to the WSJ. “If I had to bet on a city that will come back stronger and better than ever, it’s our city.”

According to the WSJ, the mayor-elect said he wanted to run for mayor because he had a hard time explaining San Francisco’s decline to his children.
“I just couldn’t stand aside… This is our city. I love him with all my being,” he said.
Lurie plans to declare a state of emergency over the fentanyl crisisto beef up San Francisco’s police force and force City Hall employees to return to full-time in-person jobs, the WSJ reported.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been named chairman of Lurie’s transition team, and Lurie has appointed Ned Segal, Twitter’s former CFO, to a new role as head of housing and economic development.

After Lurie’s 10-point win over Breed, he told CNN he wanted to come back to common sense politics.
“I’ve been a Democrat all my life, but we don’t think of ourselves as progressive or moderate or conservative here in San Francisco,” Lurie said. “We just want to get back to common sense. We have to provide the basics and that is my plan. This is the mandate I was elected to fulfill.”

“We need to make sure we have a fully staffed police department. We need to get our behavior and the drug crisis in our city under control,” he added. “We need to make sure our small businesses can thrive. Our major businesses must return to San Francisco. We should be open for business again. I don’t believe it’s a right turn. It’s a common sense approach.”
