Newlands is one of the few grounds in South Africa that offers some assistance to spinners. However, things were very different in the last test played at this venue. The match was played between South Africa and India in January last year.
Batting first, South Africa were bowled out for just 55 runs while India scored 153. In the second innings, South Africa scored 176 before India chased down the target of 79 runs by losing three wickets. The Pacers had thoroughly dominated proceedings. No spinner had bowled a single in that game.
The ICC had later rated the pitch as “unsatisfactory” under the ICC’s field and pitch monitoring process. The conditions could be different this time and the spinners could make their presence felt in the next game.
The weather report is very promising for the upcoming SA vs PAK second test. Rain is very unlikely to play sports during the game. With the conditions in Cape Town likely to be difficult for the batsmen, the next match could prove to be an exciting contest as well.
