The WBA has announced today that they have approved the heavy weight title of WBA “regular” to be at stake for the struggle of Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2 in Times Square in New York.
This will cause Garcia-Romero’s struggle to have more at stake when they are, instead of being a clash that establishes a struggle between Ryan and Devin Haney in October. Capturing the WBA title will make the resale against Haney larger with a title in play.
Rolly and Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 kos) are ranked in the number 2 and #3, respectively, in the WBA’s ranking in Welterweight. Therefore, it makes sense that the World Boxing Association will have its “regular” title on the line for its fight next month Dazn PPV.
Ryan has often been criticized for never taking a world title during his nine -year career. If you catch WBA’s heavyweight belt, you can close this critique permanently. This will validate his career and give him credentials that have disappeared in the eyes of hardcore boxing fans who pay attention to details like this.
Garcia’s disadvantage is that if he captures the “Regular” title of the WBA against Rolly, he must face the winner of the fight between the World Super World Champion of the WBA World Cup, Jaron “Boots”, Ennis and Shakhhram Giyasov. Fighting these guys would be difficult for Ryan, as they are great weights with excellent power and technical skills.
The recent WBA champion, Ennis, has been elevated to the WBA champion 147 today by the World Boxing Association. Boots (35-0, 30 kos) must defend his title against his obligatory WBA Giyasov in the 120 days after capturing the title of Eimantas Stanionis on April 12.
“Ennis is obliged to defend his super championship against Shakhram Giyasov, the official challenger of the division,” according to the WBA website. “According to WBA rules, Ennis has to face Giyasov within 120 days after the victory of April 12 on Stanionis. The winner of Ennis vs. Giyasov will have to deal with the winner of Garcia Vs. Romero.”
