BBC Check
The Russian warship was disguised, using the fake signal ID while traveling through the English channel with two sanctioned oil tankers, found the BBC to check the investigation.
Boikiy – Corite, armed with guided missiles – broadcast fake identification code when it went through the Saturday channel.
On tracking sites, it appeared incorrectly as ships that used this ID. The BBC Verify corresponded to the ID with Boikiy, using satellite shots, data tracking and videos under the bridge in Denmark.
He traveled near two vessels, which are known to enter the Russian “shadow fleet” – a network of tankers, whose property can be dark and used to transport sanctioned oil products.
BBC Verify appealed to the Russian Embassy in London for comment. But experts told the BBC to make sure that the recent Western steps against the shadow fleet may have pushed Moscow to use its military personnel to protect the tankers.
Last month, the Russian SU-35 fighter flew past the shadow fleet and entered the Estonian air space after the country tried to intercept the ship suspected of transferring sanctioned oil.
“It seems that the action is intended to restrain the UK and other NATO states from the attempt to land and, or, to use these vessels, since the availability of the serviceman increases the risk of confrontation and further escalation,” said Dmitry Garenburg, a senior researcher at the Military -Marine Analysis Center.
For the first time, attention was paid to Boikiy in the social media independent analyst with the open source Christian Panton source in the blues.
It is known that the ship left Western Africa in June, where it took part in the diplomatic mission. The photos posted on the Internet showed that the ship, combed in the capital of Guinea, Konakri.
Corveta left the port without activating his automatic identification system (AIS). All ships are expected to broadcast the signal, although military courts are often sailed without it.
However, a ship that travels under total identification number 4000000 is a code that is sometimes used by a vessel that wants to warn others about their presence in safety opinions, not revealed – was briefly seen near the Canary Islands.
The place corresponds to the time when it could take fights to overcome 200 km from Konakri. The satellite images considered by the BBC Verify showed a 100-meter ship, which corresponds to the size of Boikiy and distinguishing it from other vessels that used the ID.
Frederick Van Lockeren – Analyst and Ex -Lieutenant in the Belgian Fleet – noted that the actions of the fight were unusual for the Russian military vessel.
“Usually, when the Russians want to remain hidden secretly, they just turn off their AIS signal,” he said. “So that they are masked as something else … It is very, very rarely.”
Later, two tankers who made their way from India through the Suez Canal and through the Mediterranean – Sierra and Naxas joined the Boikiy. Both ships were sanctioned by the UK.
All three courts met at the mouth of the channel on June 20. Here, the Russian naval dishes appeared again on radar and optical satellite images, which allowed us to confirm once again that it was the size and form that corresponded to Boikiy.
Naxas reached the entrance to the channel a few days earlier than on other ships, and waited for the warship before moving into the channel.
The UK Ministry source confirmed that the BBC has convinced that the royal fleet was swept away when it passed through the channel.
It seems that satellite images revised by the BBC Verify show that the ship lasts when it moves along the waterway, but we cannot confirm that it is a royal ship of the Military Fleet.
All three courts went to the Baltic Sea, where Boikiy – still traveled under the fake AIS marker – was recorded under the Big Belt Bridge in Denmark.
Footage from the web -chamber for the first time showed the vessel as a military utensil.
It is unclear where the trial is striving, although all three continue to swim on the Baltic States and perhaps moving towards ports in mainland Russia or Kalingrad – exceptional between Poland and Lithuania.
