Days after his behavior in 2025 agitated US Open Debate, Rory McIlroy He explained that he was leaving everything in the past – but not before a little commitment.
McIlroy, 36, Spoke to reporters on Wednesday, June 18.
“I definitely like to relax and have a glass of wine on a Sunday night,” said Mcilroy. “I wouldn’t say that is the best recovery moderation.”
McIlroy finished in an equalizer at 19ths at Oakmont Country Club over the weekend, a tournament that saw him grinding a you marker, raining a golf club down the fair road and avoiding talking to the media.
“I think everyone has their own way of improving after difficult weeks,” explained McIlroy. “I think only the small habits you pick up along the way, whether it’s physical or mentally or escapes it and gives yourself a little time to recharge.”
He added, “But yes, I think it’s important to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Especially when you play these big events and there is a lot of pressure and expectation. It’s important to escape all that too.”
In the middle of a busy PGA tour schedule, McIlroy said he was trying to “get back in” the right mindset starting on Monday.
“I put myself that day,” he said. “I think Monday between tournaments is quite important as a replacement.”
Mcilroy is part of a stacked field in the passenger championship, which includes 2025 US Open Champion Jj spaun. Scottie Scheffler. Collin morikawa and Xander Schauffele.
After his final round in the U.S. Open, McIlroy admitted he was struggling to find motivation after winning his first Masters championship in April, making him just the sixth golfer in history to win the Grand Slam career.
“Look, I climbed my Everest in April, and I think once you do something like that, you have to make your way back down, and you have to look for another mountain to climb,” said McIlroy.
Although he gave correspondents time on Sunday in the US Open Championship, McIlroy decided to opt out of talking to them several times throughout the week. He removed his reluctance much in the golf world, Including Irish Golf Legend Paul McGinley.
“I don’t like to see that,” said McGinley, 58, on Saturday, June 14, according to Golf.com. “I think Rory is better than that. Either or not to talk to the media or not give a press conference like that does not serve it fairly or correctly to the person he is.”
McGinley added, “It looks like he had enough of everything. Whether he was emotionally freeing everything that has happened in his career, I don’t know. But he is not himself. This is not normal.”
